Hakodate Weekend Getaway (Day 1 - Part 3 ) /

Taking a tour of the Memorial Ship [Mashu Maru] was actually my mother-in-law's request. I didn't mind because I love ships as much as cars and trains. The reason why my mother-in-law was interested is because she works at the Memorial Ship [Hakkoda Maru] in Aomori. She wanted to see the difference in the displays, the tour, the goods, etc.

The Memorial Ship [Mashu Maru]. This was one of the large ferries that serviced the Aomori - Hakodate route before the Seikan Tunnel which connects the island of Honshu to Hokkaido was completed.

The benches are cute with the anchor motif.

As I've mentioned before, I love public art. This is a statue of Thetis, Goddess of the Ocean. The title is [Ao・Umi・Thetis] which translates to [Blue・Ocean・Thetis]. The artist's name is Machiko Kodera and was made in 2000.

The anchor displayed here is a JIS type anchor and is was used on a tugboat. This anchor weights about 230 kilograms (507 lbs) as compared to the ship's anchor which is about 4000 kilograms (about 8820 lbs).

The Mashu Maru has a large dining area. They also sell Mashu Maru goods too. Hakkoda Maru can learn a thing or two from them.

Walking around the deck again and checking out the various views. The mountain in the background is Hakodateyama which overlooks the city. You can take a gondola to the top. In the evening you can enjoy what is known as the million dollar night view. However, we didn't go up the mountain on this trip.

Another view of Hakodateyama. Near the bottom of the picture you can see Hachimanzaka (Hachiman Slope).

We will be walking up Hachimanzaka (Hachiman Slope) after we finish touring the ship. Then we will walk around the Motomachi area.

Saying good-bye to Mashu Maru.

There is another place that was at the top of my list to see while visiting Hakodate. I wanted to go to the Hula Hoop Cafe. This small cafe is located in Motomachi where many churches stand. The reason I wanted to go this cafe was not to eat there but because it houses a small Showa Era (1926-1989) toy museum. Especially toys from the sixties and seventies (Showa 35 - Showa 54) and as someone who spent their elementary years (1969-1973 Showa 44-48) in Japan, it really interests me. But I will talk about that in my next post...
