8 Huit Dubois /

Yesterday, my wife and I went out for lunch at a recently opened gourmet burger shop in Hirakawa City. The name of the shop is [8 Huit Dubois]. It is the sister shop of Cafe Dubois in Hirosaki. It opened in February and the business hours are 11am to 3pm Saturday through Thursday. Friday the shop is closed. You must make a reservation if you plan to eat their in the evening.

What makes this shop a little different from the shop in Hirosaki is that there are four burgers that are only available here and not at their sister store.  The four burgers are the Premium Cheeseburger, the flame-broiled Steak Burger, the Ginger Teriyaki Chicken Burger and Healthy Tuna Avocado Sandwich.

The March special burger was a Pulled Pork Burger. As today was March 31st, this was the last day where you could enjoy it.

I of course ordered the Pulled Pork Burger which is made with domestic pork, Aomori beef, lettuce, cheddar cheese, coleslaw salad, mayonnaise and barbecue sauce.  My wife ordered the flame-broiled steak burger.

Fries are not included with the burgers so we shared an order of fries.

My wife also ordered a hot cup of coffee which is served with dogu shaped cookie.

I decided to have an afternoon beer.

The pulled pork burger. Oh my. That was worth the trip to Hirakawa which is only a forty-five minute drive from our house.

My wife's flame-broiled steak burger is made with 100% red meat, onions, tomato, lettuce, Parmesan cheese sauce, pickles, mayonnaise and ketchup. She let me have a bite and I must say the steak was so soft and tender! I think I'm going to order this the next time we go.

After lunch, I said I would treat my wife to dessert so we went to a place called Tasakoimura which is only three minutes away from the burger shop. My wife had a strawberry parfait while I tried their roasted sweet potato parfait.

This place is also known for its shiawase no ichigo ame, a snack made with fresh strawberries so we had to eat one of those too.

My wife wanted a little something else and said this was also dessert. Grilled chicken skins.

Bon Appetit!

Travels around the Shimokita Peninsula (Part 3) /

Before heading out the door to our next destination, Mount Osore, we enjoyed a breakfast at the place we stayed at.

It was not a very long drive and we soon reached our destination.

It is Golden Week after all so it wasn't unual to see the carp streamers that are displayed for Children's Day which is celebrated every May 5th.

Bridge over the Sanzu River /

The Sanzu River is similar to the River Styx. In Buddhist tradition it is the river the dead must cross on their way to the afterlife.

Statues of Datsueba and Keneou /

Datsueba is an old woman who sits by the shore of the Sanzu River. According to Wikipedia "...when a child dies its soul has to cross the Sanzu River. Traditionally, when a person dies, it is believed that they can cross the river at three different spots depending on how they lived their lives. Since children have not accumulated enough experiences, however, they are unable to cross. At the river's edge, the souls of deceased children are met by Datsue-ba. There, she strips the children of their clothes and advise them to build a pile of pebbles on which they can climb to reach paradise. But before the pile reaches any significant height, the hag and underworld demons maliciously knock it down. The Buddhist Jizo saves these souls from having to pile stones eternally on the bank of the river by hiding them in his robe."

Keneo is an old man who sits by the shore of the Sanzu River. According to Wikipedia and Buddhist folklore, "W
hen a soul of an adult arrives at the river, Datsueba forces the sinners to take off their clothes, and Keneō hangs these clothes on a riverside branch that bends to reflect the gravitnishment are then performed by the pair. For those who steal, for example, Datsue-ba breaks their fingers, and together with Keneō, she ties the sinner's head to the sinner's feet.
