Travels around the Shimokita Peninsula (Part 2) /

Continuing our adventures in the Shimokita Peninsula, after checking out the Cape Shiriya Lighthouse and seeing and feeding the kandachime, our next goal was to go to a hot spring in the Yagen Valley.

Nearing our next destination.

This was the remnants of a railway that was used for logging beech trees.

Just so you know I was there.

And here we are at the "Kappa no Yu". A statue of a kappa near the parking lot.

Time to enjoy a nice hot outdoor bath.

The bear says we're open for business.

You can enjoy a free foot bath at "Kappa no Yu" as well.

Public phone booth made of wood. Very stylish.

Before heading to our lodgings for this evening, we went to one other hot spring area. The place is called Shimofuro in Kazamaura.

We had made reservations at a minshuku or guest house in Ohata Town. The name of our guest house was [Matsu no Ki].

The cost for the evening was 8000 yen per person which includes a meal with fresh sea urchins.

I bought this Rape Blossom Beer at Yokohama Town's Roadside Station.

More beers before dinner and a bath.

It's beer time!

Cheers and dinner is served!

Dinner time!!

Fresh sea urchins. My wife was very excited and I think I let her have one or two of mine as well. She ate five of them if my memory serves me.

Scallops with miso in a shell. This was so good.

We were also served some tempura.

Squid is also very popular in the Shimokita Peninsula.

A dish called mozuku. It's pretty much seaweed marinated in vinegar.

Some type of grilled fish.

A small plate of sashimi with squid and tuna.

Some mountain vegetables I believe.

The dish is now heated up. An Aomori specialty called kaiyaki miso. It's grilled scallops with miso and mixed with an egg.

We also enjoyed the small bath at the guesthouse.

The only thing left to do is turn in. Tomorrow we will be heading to Osorezan.
