Don's Aomori Visit (Day 5 Part 1) /

Don's fifth day in Aomori is August 1st. The start of my one week holiday from work. As my wife had to work today, Don and I are going to head to Hirosaki by train. Our main goal being Hirosaki Castle in Hirosaki Park.

Don said this is something he doesn't see in the Pacific Northwest. A snowplow train. The track will need its services soon enough.

Today is the start of the Neputa Festival in Hirosaki, not to be confused with the Nebuta Festival in Aomori City. We were greeted at Hirosaki station by a group of elementary school kids playing the taiko drums and cymbals. Unfortunately, the video I took was too large to upload onto this blog.

And it's really Hirosaki that is known for Aomori apples!

This is a Neputa float.

Even the mail box at the station has a large apple displayed on top of it.

Even the title of this statue is [Ringo no Kaze] which translates to "Wind of the Apple" and the woman on the right is holding a basket of apples.

But the first order of business when reached Hirosaki was to have lunch. I suggested a soup curry shop called "Kandy Spice" which recently moved from the seventh floor of the Nakasan department store to the food court in the basement. The name of the shop is [Kandy Spice]. My wife and I had eaten at the restaurant when it was still on the seventh floor and really enjoyed it.

I recommended to Don their kawapari chicken. Kawapari meaning crispy skinned chicken.

After lunch, we walked to Hirosaki Park. It's a good twenty to thirty minute walk from the station.

In case some of you didn't know, the castle wall is currently being repaired. The castle's original location is on the corner of this piece of land. But in order to repair the wall, first the city had to move the castle!

The tree is a type of pine tree. In Japanese, it is called an aiguro matsu and is over three hundred years old.

Of course I didn't forget the touristy pictures. Here is Don in front of Hirosaki Castle.

Don said he's tried a variety of ice creams and soft serves but has yet to eat an apple flavored one - until now!

It's my wife that usually takes pictures of different manholes but as she was working today, I took this picture for her. A manhole with Hirosaki's mascot, Takamaru.

It was quite hot again today, so we went in search of a craft beer house that's run by a foreigner. We found the neighborhood of drinking establishments but as it was late afternoon, the bars were not open.

As we were walking around, I spotted Anpan-man.

And Anpan-man's nemesis, Baikin-man!

Still more to explore...

As I mentioned before, today Don would be on his own as me and my wife are working. I work until 9pm and my wife gets off at 6pm. But Don is adventurous and sent me a few of the pictures he took of his time on his own.

Don said since he's in Aomori, that he must eat some Aomori apples and apparently that was one of the first things he did this morning (or afternoon). I'm pretty sure he went to [Tsugaru Ro].

He said he had lunch at restaurant near the station and ordered a scallop curry.

And washed his meal down with a bottle of Oirase Beer. Looks like he chose the stout.

What he mostly did today was mostly shopping - at Nakasan and Sakurano. Then he made a return trip to Utou Shrine to feed the turtles he saw there the other day. He also went to Kendoji Temple, which is located near our house, to check out the five hundred rakans or arhats if you prefer. The meaning of the words according to the FreeDictionary website is: in Buddhism, one who has attained enlightenment.

Bikkuri Donkey /

(Picture taken in winter). At night, we went out for dinner to a hamburger steak restaurant called Bikkuri Donkey. As Don didn't have a picture of the restaurant, this is the branch that's closest to our house.

Don was surprised at the size of the restaurant's menu! Yep, the large board is brought to your table after you have been seated. As you can see, I'm still in my work clothes.

Starting tomorrow, I will be off from work for the next six days. As my wife will be working, Don and I will explore Hirosaki in the day and then go to Asamushi at night to see the Asamushi Fireworks. Stay tuned.
