Don's Aomori Visit (Day 2 Part 1) /

August 1st was the start of my extended break from work but as it was a Sunday, my wife and I had plans to take my friend Don to Lake Juniko and Fukaura along the coast of the Sea of Japan. I told Don we would start early tomorrow as it's going to be a full day. We got up around 7am and left the house before 8am. We would make side trips along the way if Don thought was something interesting or if we thought he might enjoy seeing some of the unplanned sites.

Less than an hour into our trip and we made our first side trip. We stopped at an old farm house in Goshogawara. It is the former residence of the Kusumi Family. The place wouldn't be open for business until 9am but the volunteers who work there were kind enough to open the place early for us. As it was summer and the beginning of the Nebuta season in Aomori, the interior of the farm house was filled with a lot of items for sale.

A variety of nice material on sale for 800 yen.

Would you like to buy some from us?

What the devil?

Cute little family.

A very elaborate family altar.

What would travel be like without our touristy pictures?

Out in the back yard of the farm house. You can't tell from this picture but there is a dragonfly on top of the pole.

On the weekends and summers, a lot of events are held here such as making some of your own pottery. This is one of the kilns.

This is a different farmhouse which is located at the Morita Roadside Station in Tsugaru City. It was converted into a soba shop. We made another short stop at the roadside station and had an ice cream break.

Don was amazed that there was ice cream all the way to the bottom of the cone.

Instead of driving to straight to Lake Juniko, we decided to stop at an area called Senjojiki.

That would be the Sea of Japan in the distance.

We spotted some strange sea critters in one of the tide pools.

Me and Don with the Sea of Japan behind us.

We spotted a snorkeler.

We were at Senjojiki at the same time the Gono Line was. This train stops here for about thirty minutes to let passengers check out Senjojiki.

Do you see the rainbow?

Don bet me that this was a mirror. I told him it was a hole. He went to investigate and found that I was right. I didn't want to break it to him right away that I already knew it was a hole as I have been here on many occasions.

One of the many monuments dedicated to Osamu Dazai, a popular Japanese writer who wrote a lot of books and stories about the Tsugaru area.

This is a monument dedicated to a poet named Keigetsu Omachi.

As Don also brought his International Driver's License, now seemed like a good time as any for him to experience driving on the left side of the road. As with my wife when she drove in the U.S., Don had mistaken the wipers for the blinkers...six times!! He tied with my wife who did the same thing in the States. We're still in the middle of Day 2 of Don's Aomori Adventure, but we will shall continue tomorrow.
