In the summer of 2017, my wife and I went on many drives. One day, we decided to check out a shrine near Iwakiyama Shrine. The lesser known shrine is called Takateru Shrine. It's located about ten minutes away by car from Iwakiyama Shrine.
２０１７年の夏僕と妻が良くドライブに出掛けた。ある日岩木山神社の近くにあるもう一つの神社に行ってみた。それが高照神社。車で岩木山神社から１０分の距離。
There are four toriis to the shrine. This one is actually the second torii (gate) and approach to the shrine.
高照神社に鳥居は四つもある。これは二つ目の鳥居と参道。

Zuijin Gate / 随身門
The zuijin are Gods who guard the shrine gates. Below are the two zuijin at Takateru Shrine.

地蔵についての説明。
We had lunch here at the soba shop [Jizo Chaya].
ランチはこのそば処「地蔵茶屋」で食べました。
We ate the Tsugaru Mountain Vegetable Soba with a side of shoga miso oden.
食べたのは津軽山菜蕎麦と生姜味噌おでん。

青森グルメのごへい餅も食べてみました。
It was such a nice day, we were just driving along the road when we spotted a sign for the Tsugaru Dam. I suggested checking it out. On our way there, we saw a large sign for a place called Niogataki. We decided to stop there first.
天気が凄いよかったので、ドライブしながら津軽ダムの標示を見てそこを目指そうと提案した。行く途中に大きな看板があって。乳穂ヶ滝と書いてあった。”におがたき”と読む。とりあえずここも寄ってみた。
My wife said she would wait in the car while I check out the area. First, I walked through the red torii.
妻が車に待ってるから、自分で行ってみてと言われた。最初は鳥居を通りました。

The area was much larger than I first thought. I went back and told my wife she definitely has to check out this place.
場所は思ったより広い。早速車に戻って、妻にここは絶対見るべきと伝えた。
It's a little difficult to see the waterfall in this picture but it's there.
滝がこの写真じゃ見づらいけど、本当にあります。
At least you can see the waterfall.

Yakushi Kannon / 薬師観音
A little later I read in a pamphlet that the waterfall freezes in the winter and is also illuminated giving it an unworldly appearance.
結構あとだったが、パンフレットに冬にこの滝が凍ってライトアップされる。幻想的な感じになる。
We took another detour as we saw a sign for the Iwayakanzeon. We decided to check that out as well. Before that, I went for a short walk along the Takanosu Nature Trail. My wife didn't want to come with me for fear of running into any bears. Fortunately I didn't come across any either.
岩谷観世音の表示も見て、また寄り道そした。観音に行く前に鷹ノ巣自然歩道案内図もあり、自分は探索してみた。妻が熊の会うのが怖がって、遠慮した。車で待つと言った。２０分くらいの散歩した。運良く自分も熊と出会いませんでした。

After I came back from my short hike, my wife and I decided to see the Iwayakazeon.
ちょっとした散歩から戻って妻と一緒に岩谷観世音を目指した。

You have to climb a short ladder as well to get to the kannon.

We finally made our way to the Tsugaru Dam, it is the largest dam in Aomori Prefecture. It replaced the Meya Dam which is now underwater.
やっと津軽ダムに到着。津軽ダムは青森県の一番大きなダムです。前にあった目屋ダムは現在沈んでます。
Today's main destination or so it became - the Tsugaru Dam.
今日の目玉の目的地。ま、途中で決めたけどー青森県の最大のダムー津軽ダム。
The lake by the dam is called the Tsugaru Shirakami Lake.
The cornerstone of Tsugaru Dam.
津軽ダムの定礎石。
A sign explaining the laying of the cornerstone. A ceremony is conducted before the beginning of construction to wish for its successful completion.
工事の本格化と悠久の無事を願って執り行われる「定礎の議」は建設工事の開始に当たり、柱の土台として石を置く儀式から始まったものです。

ダムを探索したあと、家に帰るしかない。でもも一ヶ所に行った。道の駅でアイスとスナックを買って、帰るのみ。これで今日の冒険の幕が閉じた。
When you go to certain dams, they give out a free dam trading card. This was the beginning of one our our new hobbies - collecting dam cards.
全てのダムではないけど、結構ダムカードを提供するダムもある。この津軽ダムで僕と妻の新たな趣味が始まった。それがダムカードを集めることです。
