This year's Valentine Chocolates / 今年貰ったバレンタインチョコ

Did you know Japan is one of the few countries in the world where on Valentine's Day, it is the women who give their husbands, boyfriends, crushes, etc. chocolate. The guys are supposed to reciprocate on White Day which is held on March 14. I believe it was a marketing scheme thought up by the Japanese confectionaries to double the sales of sweets during those two months. Japanese women also used to give their male bosses and co-workers giri-choco (obligatory chocolates) but that tradition has virtually disappeared as it is blatantly sexist. 

知ってましたか？日本のバレンタインデイに女性たちが旦那、彼氏や憧れの男子のチョコあげること。そして３月１４日のホワイト・デイで男性たちが貰ったチョコの相手にお返しすること。どっかで聞いたが、その習慣は日本のチョコラティエやパティシエが考案したこと。そのおかげで年に２回スイーツの売上が良くなる。昔の日本は義理チョコもあり、その習慣はドンドンなくなってるけどね。だってそれはどう考えても完全に性差別主義なことだ。

Anyway, here are the sweets I received this year from my wife, my sister-in-law, and various other people of the fair sex.

Oh, chocolates from [Le Chocolat] in Hirosaki. 

おう、弘前にある「ル・ショコラ」からだ。

Very nice and fancy.

お洒落ですね。

The Age of Dinosaurs chocolates. This was pretty cool. 

恐竜時代のチョコ。結構カッコイイ。

Somebody knew that I'm a big fan of all things maple. 

誰か僕の好物のメープル味を知ってたな。

The individual wrappers are really cute. 

一つ一つのラップが可愛い。

Yokohama Grand Intercontinental Hotel chocolates. 

ヨコハマ・インタコンチネンタル・グランド・ホテルのチョコ。

Oh, one of my students notice the "Fryball" keychain on my smartphone so they bought me the real thing.

おう、一人の生徒が自分の携帯に「フライボール」のキーホルダーが付いてるのを気付き、自分に本物をプレゼントした。

Of course I gave out chocolates on White Day (March 14) to all the people I received sweets from. 

もちろん３月１４日（ホワイト・デイ）にお返ししましたよ。
