Last Wednesday, August 3, as I was headed to my company classes in Naijoushi, I heard the announcement in the train that due to heavy rains, the train would be stopping at Kawabe station, the station before Naijoshi where I usually get off. All services between Kawabe and Hirosaki were closed due to bad weather conditions. it had been raining for quite a while and the Iwaki River was on the verge of overflowing. This means, my return to Aomori station after my class would be from Kawabe. I had to have our office manager and the factory make new arrangements to make sure I would arrive at both places on time. My company classes end at 5:00pm. The train from Kawabe station to Aomori is scheduled for 5:47pm. Looks like I will have a bit of waiting to do at Kawabe station.
Kawabe Station /
Kawabe Station is a very average run-of-the-mill station with nothing exciting about it. As you can see from the above picture, even the building is plain.
I found the small inn across from the station to be more interesting as it has that Showa design. It's called the Maruse Inn.
Recently, I've been finding myself taking a lot of pictures of railway stations. Not the trains but the stations that people use (or don't use) as there are many unmanned stations in Aomori.
Kawabe Station is the last stop on the Gono Line which starts from Higashi Noshiro in Akita Prefecture. It runs along the coast of the Sea of Japan and is a very scenic ride.
Not too far from Kawabe Station is Inakadate Village, known for its rice paddy art.
Due to the pandemic, my wife and I did not see last year's rice paddy art which featured the all Aomori location movie [Itomichi].
I was sitting at one of end of the waiting room on the platform.
A train from the Gono Line pulled into the station.
Naijoshi is my usual stop for my company classes.
View of the other platform for trains heading in the direction of Hirosaki.
These standard trains aren't as cool as steam locomotives but I like them just as well.
The Sakura Kanko bus office also has that certain Showa flavor.
There are usually a couple of railroad cars here filled with small stones. Definitely not coal.
I walked to the very end of the platform, then took a picture looking back.
I made back to our school just in time for me to teach my inhouse classes.
Looking out the window from one of our classrooms. You can see Mount Iwaki in the distance. It's between the two large buildings near the center of the picture.
Time to get back into teaching mode as I had two more classes to teach.
