On our drive to the Oirase Gorge and Lake Towada, we were accompanied by my mother-in-law and her younger sister. We headed towards the Oirase Gorge by way of the Hakkoda Mountains.
今回のドライブの目的地は奥入瀬渓流と十和田湖。今日は４人で出掛けました。もちろん僕と妻。一緒に来てたのは僕の義理の母と義理の母の妹。八甲田山経由で十和田湖を目指した。
On the way to the gorge, we stopped at the Kayano Teahouse.
奥入瀬渓流に行く途中、かやの茶屋に寄りました。
The teahouse is known for its "longevity tea".
茶屋の名物は長生きの茶。
This sign never ceases to crack me up everytime I read it. It says if you drink one cup of this tea, your life will be extended for three years. If you drink two cups, your life will be extended for six years. That last part just makes no sense to me. However, if you drink a third cup, you will live until you die! Uh...that means if you drink three cups and get hit by a car the next day, that was the extent of your extended life.
長生きの茶のサイン何回読んでもあの最後の文書が疑問に思っちゃう。一杯飲むと三年長生きし、これはわかるよ。二杯飲むと六年長生きし、これもわかりやすいよ。ですが、三杯飲むとなんと死ぬまで長生きするという。え？死ぬまで長生き？もうしかして、明日交通事故にあったら、それは死ぬまで長生きしたという意味になっちゃうじゃないか。

A snack I picked up at the Gorge-side station. Apple chocolate bar.
渓流の駅「おいらせ」で買ったおやつ。りんごチョコ。
It was pretty good.
結構美味しかった。
We then drove to the Ishigedo Rest Area along the gorge. Parked there and walked along the trail.
奥入瀬渓流にあるレストエリア、石ヶ戸で車を駐車して、渓流沿いを歩いた。
You never know what kind of creatures you will meet along the way.
どういった生物と出会うのも分かりませんね。

We didn't walk to the Kumoi Waterfall as we usually do as we were going to continue on to Lake Towada.
いつものの雲井の滝までは歩いてなかった。これから十和田湖に行くから。
Lake Towada / 十和田湖
I had to try this craft beer called Blue Oasis that you can only get at Lake Towada.
十和田湖にしか手に入れない地ビールブルー・オアシスを飲んでみた。
I most likely ordered the Towada barayaki set.
多分自分が注文したのは十和田バラ焼き定食。
After lunch snacks. My wife and I both bought ourselves kiritanpo. I love the illustrated sign that says don't point the kiritanpo downward or it might slip of the skewer.
ランチを食べた終わったけど、十和田湖に居るからきりたんぽを売ってる店があると買って食べますよね。きりたんぽ食べるときの注意のイラストが可愛い。書いてあるのは”きりたんぽ下に向かないでね。ぬけちゃうよ。”
Just in case you don't know what kiritanpo is, it's a rice dish that originated in Akita Prefecture. Freshly cooked rice is pounded until somewhat mashed, then formed into cylindars around a skewer, and toasted over an open hearth. It is often topped with sweet miso.
The Maiden Statue by Kotaro Nakamura in 1953 which was dedicated at the lakeshore for Lake Towada's 15th anniversary after being designated a national park.
「乙女の像」は高村光太郎の作品。１９５３年、十和田湖が十和田八幡平国立公園に指定されてからの１５周年記念の為に作ったものです。
I also love taking pictures of old buildings. This does look very Showa to me.
古い建物の写真と撮るのも好き。結構昭和って感じですね。

We didn't go to the shrine this time round though.
今回は十和田神社までお参りに行きませんでした。
This looks like a hunter's hut.
この建物、まるでマタギの小屋みたい。
it appears Lake Towada Hotel went out of business. My wife said she once stayed there with her grandmother.
十和田湖ホテルはもう閉店しましたね。妻が昔自分のお婆ちゃんとそのホテルに泊まった思い出があるみたい。
We also spotted a small kokeshi doll factory. I think it was closed as well since we didn't go check it out.
十和田湖こけし製作所も発見しましたけど、行ってないことは多分この日は営業してなかった。
And so ended our weekend drive.
これで今日の冒険の幕が閉じた。
