Sai Village and Shimofuro Hot Spring (Part 2) / 佐井村と下風呂温泉（パート２）

We arrived at Shimofuro. What we didn't realize was that it would cost us each about ￥1500 from Sai Village to Shimofuro As there were four of us, that's ￥6000 right there...and that's for a one-way ride. My wife said it would have been cheaper if we were to drive to Shimofuro from Aomori. Anyway, this is our lodgings for the night - the Ogiya Inn. 

下風呂に到着。私たちが知らなかったけど、佐井村から下風呂のバス代は一人約￥１５００でした。私たちは４人だったので、そこで￥６０００を使いました。。。片道で！妻が車で青森から下風呂まで行ったほうが安い。とりあえずここ私たちの宿です。おおぎや旅館。

Shimofuro Hot Spring. Although our inn also has a hot spring, we would go here as well. It is a short walk from our inn. 

下風呂温泉。旅館にもお風呂はありますよ。でもせっかく下風呂に来たから下風呂温泉にも入らないと。

It was still light out so my wife and I decided to go for a walk around the town. My mother-in-law and sister-in-law decided to stay in the room and relax. My wife and I walked along the Oma Arch Bridge Memorial Road. 

外はまだ明るいから僕と妻は散歩に出かけた。旅館の周辺を探索した。義理と母と義理の妹は部屋でくつろぐと言ってました。僕と妻が大間鉄道アーチ橋メモリアルロードの上を

歩いた。

The Oma Line was supposed to connect Mutsu City's Ohata Line from Ohata Station to Oma Town but it was never completed. It is now a tourist resource and is known as the "Vanished Oma Line". 

大間鉄道はむつ市の大畑線の終点大畑駅から同県下北郡の大間駅まで結ぶ計画であった未成の鉄道路線である。観光資源にもなっており、地元では”幻の大間鉄道”として知られてる。

Along the road you will come upon the Memorial Road Foot Bath. 

道路を歩いたらすぐメモリアルロード足湯に辿り着く。

The water was pretty hot as you can see my skin is a bit red. By the way, my feet may look dirty but it isn't, I assure you.

足湯は結構熱かった。足がちょっと赤くなってる。足のほうも汚く見えるけどそいうことはないよ。本当です。

We spotted what looked like an abandoned building near the end of the Memorial Road. 

メモリアルロードを歩き続いたら、空屋みたいな建物を発見。

This slope is called the Shiomi Slope.

We then walked around the Shimofuro Fishing Port. 

次探索したのは下風呂魚胡。

Next to the fishing port was a park. It's called Kaikyoisaribi Park. 

魚胡のすぐ近くに小さな公園があった。ここは海峡いさりび公園という。

These boats mostly fish for squid.

I'm not sure what kind of vessel you would call this one.

This is where squid racing is held. Unfortunately, no races were held while we were staying in Shimofuro. I think it's been closed for a while too. 

この場所は元祖烏賊様レース（いかさまれーす）が行ってる。残念ながら私たちが泊まったとき、イカレースはやってなかった。結構前から休業中だったみた。

Going left will take you to the hot spring area. If you go on the right, you will pass by the resort. 

左に行けば下風呂温泉郷に入る。右側に行ったら、温泉郷を通り過ぎることになる。

And here we are back at our inn. Time to change into a yukata, take a bath, enjoy dinner, drink beer, then take a bath at the place we walked by earlier in the day. But that will be for the next post. 

旅館に戻りました。これから浴衣に着替えて、お風呂に入り、夕飯を食べて、ビールを飲んで、そして夕方で見に行った下風呂温泉に入る。でもそれはまた今度。

Sai Village and Shimofuro Hot Spring (Part 1) / 佐井村と下風呂温泉（パート１）

A few years ago, my mother-in-law had free tickets for the Sii Line which connects Aomori City to Sai Village on the Shimokita Peninsula. We decided to use the tickets, then would take a bus from Sai Village to the Shimofuro Hotspring area located in Kazamaura. We plan to stay the overnight at an inn in Shimofuro.

数年前義理補母がシーラインのタダ券を貰って、それを使うことになった。シーラインは青森市・脇野沢・佐井村を結ぶ高速旅客船。佐井村からバスに乗って、風間浦村にある温泉郷下風呂を目指す。そこで一泊する。

We're just hanging out by the ferry terminal waiting for our boat to come in. This is the official bus for the Aomori Wats basketball team. 

船が港に入るの待ってる間ターミナル周辺でぶらぶら歩いてる。このバスは青森市のバスケットボールチーム、青森ワッツのバスです。

This is our departure point.

There is the Memorial Ship [Hakkoda Maru] where my mother-in-law works. 

そこにメモリアルシップ「八甲田丸」が展示されてる。自分の義理の母がその船で働いてます。

The triangular building on the left is called ASPAM. It is the Aomori Prefecture Tourism Information Center. To the right is the Aomori Bay Bridge.

Out on the open sea. Well, actually it's Mutsu Bay. 

はい、海に出た。というより、ここはむつ湾です。

Our first stop is at Wakinosawa.

We're now nearing the Hotokegaura rock formations.

it's about a three hour ride from Aomori City to Sai Village. 

青森市から佐井村までは約３時間くらいの船旅。

I suppose you could call this downtown Sai Village. 

ま、ここが佐井村の中心街と言えるかもしりません。

Checking the bus schedule for Shimofuro. It was about 12:30 when we arrived in Sai Village and the next bus to Shimofuro isn't until 2:22pm. So we decided to walk around the village. 

下風呂行きのバスをチェックしてます。佐井村に到着したのは１２時半くらいで、このスケジュールを見ると次の下風呂行きのバスは１４時２２分。約２時間もあるので、佐井村を探索してみた。

First, we checked out the Kaikyo Museum located on the second floor of the Tsugaru Kaikyo Bunkakan [Arusas].

最初探索してみたのは津軽海峡文化館アルサスの２階にある海峡ミュージアム。

We also decided to have lunch at the coffee shop in the Arusas building called [Poppiez]. I think we all ordered the tempura bowl. 

ランチの時間だったので、アルサスの２階にあるレストラン「喫茶ポピーズ」で食べました。私たち全員が天丼を注文した。

And now to walk around the village. First, we walked around the pier. 

これから佐井村を探索する。最初は港周辺で歩いた。

The steps lead to a shrine. This is definitely the approach to the shrine.

The name of the place is the Yanonemori Hachimangu.

There were a couple of portable shrines in the honden.

本殿の中に二つの神輿もあった。

As we were walking around the town, we came across a house which was the birthplace of Gotaro Mikami. He was a doctor and his house served as the Sai Village branch of the Japanese Red Cross. The house was also a small museum dedicated to the doctor. 

村を歩き回ったら、ある家に止まった。三上剛太郎の生家。日本赤十字社青森県支部長。小さな博物館になってた。

That's a very large kamidana (household altar).

立派な神棚ですね。

It appears this was used in Manshu in 1905. 

これが明治１８年（１９０５）満州で使われたみたい。

I think this is an old-style weighing scale.

We actually had a guide to described everything for us. We didn't want to be rude and just leave so we listened to her. I found it to be most interesting. 

ガイドも居たので、ほかの客もなくずーとガイドの話を聞いてました。突然去るのも失礼だし、話は結構面白かった。

We're back at Arusas having an ice cream while waiting for our bus. 

アルサスに戻り、バスを待ってる間ソフトクリームを食べた。

Hey, the village does have a convenience store. It's definitely not a 7-11. It's a 7-10 store!

おう、佐井村にコンビニがある。セブンイレブンではなくセブンテンですね。正式にはなな・いち・まる WAKAYAMAだ。

We're on the bus and heading to Shimafuro. We had just passed Cape Oma, Honshu island's northernmost point. 

バスに乗って大間崎崎を通った。大間崎は本州の最北端の場所です。

Our next stop will be Shimofuro where will be staying the night. 

次の目的地は下風呂。そこで一泊します。
