Last Sunday, my wife and I decided to go for a drive. We could not decide on a destination but headed toward Noheji. We narrowed down our choices to Hayagake Park in Mutsu in the Shimokita Peninsula or the Tanesashi Coast in Hachinohe. Both destinations would take about two and half hours to get there. I opted for Kabushima Shrine in Hachinohe as it was re-opened to the publish after being under reparations for a fire that partially destroyed it.
先日の日曜日、僕と僕の妻がドライブに出掛けることにした。ですが、何処に行くかが決めてなかった。下北半島に行くか、八戸の種差海岸に行くか。野辺地方面行って、どっちが決めることにした。僕は蕪嶋神社に行きたいと言って、妻がそれをオッケーした。この２・３年間、火事の被害があって、ずーと修理中だった。やっと上まで行けるようになったので、行きたかった。そして種差海岸を目指した。

The sign says Koutsu Anzen - Buji Kaeru which translates to "Traffic Safety - Return safely". Kaeru is also a play on words as it means "frog" in Japanese, thus the frog.

Kabushima Shrine is home to the black-tailed gull which is desginated as a nationally protected species. It was breeding season so there were many chicks. And the birds were so noisy! Oh yes, and you have to be careful about receiving bird droppings on your head so the shrine provides umbrellas you can use free of cost.
夏は蕪嶋神社にある天然記念物ウミネコの繁殖期。ウミネコの子供が沢山居た。鳥たちが数えきれないくらい居て、うるさくて臭い。ウミネコの糞から守る為、境内に無料で傘を貸し出しを行ってます。
I think that's supposed to be a turnip which is kabu in Japanese.

Just a short hop, skip, and jump away was the Hachinohe City Marine Science Museum. My wife wasn't really interested in going but I talked her into it.
蕪嶋神社のすぐ近くに八戸市水産科学館「マリエント」があって、行ってみようと提案した。妻が興味がなかったが、僕のわがままを聞いてるくれた。

In Japanese, this critter is called an wooper looper. They were a fad at one time in Japan. In English, there are known as axolotl and can be found in Mexico.

I didn't bother with all the names of the fish and only took pictures of the ones I thought were pretty cool.
全ての魚の名前はメモらなかった。個人的にカッコイイやつだけ写真を撮った。

My wife told me about this ship called [Chikyu] which means "Earth". It's a deep earth exploration ship, a scientific vessel which can drill into the mantel of the earth. Some people believe that the drilling causes large earthquakes.
妻が教えてくれた。この船の名前地球深部探査船「地球号」という。始めて知った。ビデオもあり、ちょっと見たら、凄いなと想った。本物の船はなによりデッカイだろ。
Going back to the fish, we saw a lungfish.

There is an observation deck on the fifth floor of [Marient]. I took a nice picture of Kabushima Shrine from the museum.

We thought about having lunch here at the Marine Science Museum but when my wife saw the price for their unidon (fresh sea urchin bowl), we decided to drive along the coast and find another restaurant. Oh, the price was 3,300 yen!
水産科学館のレストランで食べようかなと考えたけど、妻がメニューの生ウニ丼の値段を見て、ここを諦めた。ちなみに、ここの生ウニ丼は￥３３００でした。種差海岸沿いをドライブして別の飲食店探すことにした。
