February 23, 2022 was a Wednesday and was also a national holiday in Japan. It is reigning Emperor of Japan's birthday. But what I remember most about this day was receiving the heaviest snowfall this season and spending the entire day snow shoveling.
２０２２年２月２３日は水曜日でした。今年、その日は祝祭日となっておりました。現在の天皇陛下の誕生日です。ですが、自分が一番覚えてるのはこの日こそ雪が一番積もった時でした。１日中ずーと雪かきしてました。
I woke up and opened the current in my den and was greeted by this scene.
朝起きて、書斎の部屋のカーテンを開けたら、こういう光景になってた。
I think I took this picture after clearing away the snow that accumulated on top of the car.
この写真は車に積もってた雪を払ったあとに撮ったと想う。
Oh my. the first thing I have to do this morning is remake the slope and path where we dump our snow.
うわ～、今日最初にやることは雪を捨てる場所への坂を作ることだ。
After that, we need to clear the snow from the approach to our front door.
そのあと、は玄関前とドライブウェイへの道の雪を片付けないと。
The snow on the side of the house will be after that.
家の横は坂と玄関の後だ。
I know this is going to take a few hours just from looking at the snow.
雪を見るだけで雪かき作業は結構の時間かかると分かる。
So much for relaxing on the holiday. But to tell you the truth, I actually enjoy snow shoveling.
ま、今日の祭日にリラックスする時間はないな。でも正直、自分は雪かきするのが結構好きです。
I started with the walkway from our front door down to our driveway.
やはり最初は玄関からドライブウェイへの道を作らないと。
The next big project is remaking the slope and getting rid of the excess snow and packing down the loose parts so you don't sink to your knees when you go to dump the snow.
次の大作業は坂の作り直し。積もった雪も捨てないとなにも始まらない。穴に落ちないように雪をちゃんと固まらなきゃいけないしな。
The work may seem daunting but if you keep it at, there is a light at the end of the tunnel!
永遠の終わらないと想うくらいかも知りませんが、ちょこちょこやるとトンネルの奥に光りが見えてくる。
It does feel like you're on that ice planet you see at the beginning of [The Empire Strikes Back].
映画「スターウォーズ エピソード５・帝国の逆走」の雪の惑星を思い出すわ。
After making a path from the front door to the driveway an rebuilding the slope, the next order of business is to dump the snow that's accumulated in the driveway.
玄関からドライブウェイの小道を作り、坂をっ切り直して、次の主な仕事はドライブウェイにたまってる雪を捨てる。
Hey look, I made a pseudo-igloo right here in the driveway.
見て！ちょっとしたかまくらみたいのものを作った。
But it's only big enough for one person and you also have to squat to fit inside.
大人一人しか入れない。それにしがんで入るしかない。
And now to dump the snow from the front yard.
これから玄関前の雪を捨てる。
We can see our progress.
すすめ具合が見えてきた。
The driveway is now a flat surface.
ドライブウェイの雪をやっとクリアしました。
Our car can now leave the driveway too.
車も普通に出れるようになった。

Okay, I did about three hours of snow shoveling in the morning. Time to eat lunch and take about an hour break before doing more.
さて、朝３時間くらい雪かきして、そろそろランチの時間になり、１時間の休憩を取る。
We cleared the snow so you can see where the gutter is.
側溝が見えるところまで雪かきしました。
My mother-in-law and I tackled this area after lunch.
義理の母と一緒こち側を片付けた。

まだ頑張ってる義理の母。
We were done for the day so I went for a little stroll.
今日の雪かきが終了して。そのあと、僕は近所の周りをちょっと散歩した。

The kids won't be able to swing on the swings for a while.
子供達がしばらくブランコには乗れないね。
A lot of my neighbors have to bring their snow to the park in order to dump it.
いろんな隣人が自分の家の雪をソリで運んで、この公園まで持って捨てるんだよ。大変！
Well, I think I still have about five or six months before I see scenes like the above again. Hopefully, the winter won't be as bad as it was this time around.
さて、まだ５・６ヶ月くらいがあるかな、またこの景色が見るのは。大雪にならないように祈るしかない。
