金森赤ランガ倉庫。
The title of this piece is "The Little Girl with Red Shoes" and was made by Hakodate native Machiko Kodera. The statue was said to be modeled after a little girl named Kimi-chan. The back story behind Kimi-chan is rather sad. Kimi was the daughter of a woman named Kayo Iwazaki who was from Shizuoka Prefecture. Kayo was an unwed mother. She moved to Hokkaido and married a man named Shiro Suzuki. They joined a commoner's farm which was being watched as part of a Socialist movement. The found the farm life was harsh and Kayo entrusted her daughter to two American missionaries name the Hewitts. After a few years, the Hewitt's would return to the U.S. but at this time, Kimi contracted tuberculosis (which was incurable at the time) so they sent her to an orphanage in Tokyo. Kimi would never see her mother again and died at the young age of nine. Her mother had long thought that Kimi went to the U.S. with the Hewitts and never knew about the death of her first daughter. However, there are many who dispute this story but it remains the established story and there are other statues of Kimi-chan in Shizuoka, Yokohama, Tokyo and other locales.

"The Little Girl with the Red Shoes" is also a Japanese nursery rhyme written in 1922 by poet Ujo Noguchi and composed by Nagayo Motoon. The English translation of the song is as follows:
A young girl with red shoes
was taken away by a foreigner
She rode on a ship from Yokohama Pier
taken away by a foreigner
I imagine right now she has become blue-eyed
living in that foreigner's land
Every time I see red shoes, I think of her
And every time I meet a foreigner, I think of her
When she misses Japan where she was born
I imagine she stares at the blue sea
and asks the foreigner if she can go home

函館で一番人気の坂 ー 八幡坂。
And here it is! the Hula Hoop Cafe. The Internet site showed that closing hours was 6:00pm but said it the shop might be closed earlier. As I went to check, the owner said, "I'm sorry, we're closed". It was 5:15! Using my sad face and being able to speak Japanese, I said "I thought you were opened until six". He then asked if I only wanted to look, and I said yes, I wasn't planning on having coffee. I explained that I lived in Japan during my elementary years and had an interest in Showa Era toys, especially from the seventies. He said if we were just going to look, then feel free to come in. My wife said something to effect of maybe we'll just have something to drink and I thought, oh no! I'm not going to be able to enjoy this place. But the owner was kind enough to stay open for us, didn't charge me the usual price for just looking and my wife and mother-in-law were able to sit and have coffee while I browsed the shop.
僕が一番行きたかったフラ・フープカフェに到着。ネットで閉店は６時と書いてましたが、早めに閉まってる可能性もあり。カフェについた時刻は５時１５分。僕が先に訪ねてみたので、入った瞬間、店のマスターが”もう、閉店です。”自分の日本語力を使用して、”え？６時までじゃなかったんですか？” そしたら、”見学だけですか？”。”はい！”。１００円の入館料を払おうとしたら、妻が”じゃ、私たちはなんか飲むね。”と言って、あっ、マズイ。これじゃおまちゃミュージアムが見学出来ないと思ったが、店主が”せっかく来たので、どうぞうお入り下さい”。やった！僕は別に飲み物はいらなかったが、楽しんで展示されてるおまちゃをいろいろみました。

The character below the helicopter. That's "Minashigo Hachi". I used to watch the cartoon. In English, the show is called "The Adventures of Hutch the Honeybee".
おう、ヘリの下にあるキャラクターも知ってる。それはみなしごハッチだ。アニメの”昆虫物語 みなしごハッチ”も子供の頃見てたな。

All of the above pictures were displayed on the first floor where you could also sit at a table and drink coffee. But then there was another room on the second floor with even more vintage items.
上記の写真は一階に展示されてるもの。部屋にテーブルもあり、そこでコーヒーを飲みながら、展示物が楽しめる。また２階にもっと凄いおもちゃが展示されてる。

There is an LP behind the pink and white jeeps. My brother had an album that was almost the same as that. It featured theme songs from some of our favorite cartoons of the time.

Well, there's the cafe's namesake - a hula hoop. The cafe was featured on a program on Television Tokyo called "Otona no Gokujo Yururi Tabi" with actress Megumi Asaoka introducing the cafe.
カフェの名前の由来が壁に飾ってアルフラフープ。そして右下の写真の真ん中に立てるのは女優の麻丘めぐみさん。テレビ東京の”大人極上ゆらり旅”でこのカフェが紹介されました。

Going back to the shelf of figures. Some of them I was familiar with because I used to watch the programs when I was little. For example, this is Mirror-Man. The gold figure on the right is Magma Taishi (Ambassador Magma). He was renamed Goldar in the States.
フィギャーがあった棚に戻って、自分が知ってるキャラクターは結構ありました。これはミラーマン。この番組も昔良く見てたな。あと、右側の金色のフィギャーはマグマ大使。アメリカでも放送され、ゴールダーという名前に変更された。

One of those games where you try not to touch the wire in the middle. I was terrible at it. Didn't clear it once. Fortunately, I didn't get shocked when touching the wire though.

Damn, that was a lot of fun for me. I thanked the owner for staying open late for us. On our way out, the owner then surprised by giving me two of the tin toys from his collection!
最高に面白かった。超懐かしいものもあり、見る価値があった。オーナーに遅く営業してくれてありがとうと伝え、店を去るまえにオーナーからさらにサプライズをされた。なんとブリキの車を二つくれた！

The sun is about to go down but since we were in Motomachi, we decided to check out the more major tourist sites as well. I'll be talking about those spots on the next post.
