Kusumi Family Residence / 久須美住宅

On a nice weekend back during our first spring in Aomori, my wife and I, along with my mother-in-law decided to check out the large shopping center called Elm in Goshogawara. On our way there, we saw an old farm house and decided to make a short side trip. We stopped at a place called the Kusumi Family Residence. It was an old farm house open to the public.

青森に引っ越してから初の春を過ごす。いろんな人から五所川原にあるショッピングセンター”エルム”がおすすめされた。私たちは行ったことないので、探索してみることになった。エルムに行く途中気になる建物を発見、ちょっと寄り道をした。古い民家が再現されて、覗いてみた。この建物は久須美住宅だそう。

It's a pretty big house. Of course we had to check it out.

結構大きな家でやっぱり見るべきと思った。

This is the bathroom. It reminds me of my grandmother's house in Maizuru. Same style. Dark, dank and cold. Just a big stinky hole in the ground!

昔のトイレですね。自分のお婆ちゃんの家を思い出す。トイレはだだの穴だけな感じで、よるは暗くて怖かった。

First, we decided to walk around the outside of the house.

先は家の周りを探索した。

You could see Mount Iwaki in the distance.

There is a large park next to the Kusumi Family Residence.

久須美住宅の隣に大きな公園があります。

There are a couple of kilns located outside. Once a year they hold a pottery class. 

家の外側に大きな窯が二つある。年に一回焼物体験学習を実施してる。

It was time to explore the inside of the house.

これから家の中を探索してみる。

I love this idea of using the space below the stairs as drawer space.

Sitting apart from the main house is a smaller building. These are called kura in Japanese. They're mainly used as a storage room. The kura here has many items on display as well.

家からちょと離れるところに蔵が立っております。この中もいろんなものが展示されてます。

蔵の中を見たあともう一枚の写真を撮った。

Looks like my wife took a candid photo of me while I was taking a picture of Mount Iwaki.

岩木山を撮ってるときにいつまにか妻が僕の写真を撮ってた。

We could finally see the top of Mount Iwaki before we left to go to ELM. It was nearing lunch time and we were getting hungry!

エルムに行くまえにやっと岩木山の頂上が見えた。昼食の時間が迫ってたので、私たちは結構腹減ってた。
