Road Trip to Misawa (Part 1) Unryu Daigogen Shrine, Aka Noren & the Sky Plaza /

As our friends Yukio and Reiko were still in town for the New Year's holidays, we decided to go on a little road trip to Misawa. Our main reason would be to go to a restaurant called [Aka Noren] and savour its specialty dish - barayaki.

But before leaving for Misawa, we went to the Aomori Museum of Art. From Nov. 26th through Jan. 15th, there was a "Tom and Jerry" exhibition.  As much as I would have enjoyed the exhibition, Reiko only wanted to go to buy some "Tom and Jerry" goods.

A short stop at the Michi no Eki (Road Station). It was just a nature break. We didn't buy anything here.

We did a little research and decided to check out one of the main shrines in Misawa before heading off to lunch.

We made our first stop at Unryu Gongen Shrine. It was a rather small shrine and they did provide any shrine seals.

Satisfying our appetites!

Once we finished lunch, we headed to the Sky Plaza. My wife's sister had recommended a grilled chicken place there so we thought we would check it out and order some to take home.

Misawa Sky Plaza /

We found the chicken shop my sister-in-law was talking about. Lani Chicken Factory. And we did order some chicken for take-out.

As Misawa Air Base is located nearby, there were many American products for sale at the Sky Plaza. I noticed that a lot of the items were from Costco.

I even spotted King Kong at the bottom of the stairs!

Less than a block away is the entrance to Misawa Air Base.

On our way back to Aomori City, we decided we stop by the Asamushi Aquarium before heading to a hot spring and then to my sister-in-law's house. My sister-in-law's husband is a really good friend of Yukio's so who knows what the night might hold in store for us.

Burger Shop [Niche] /

One thing I knew I was going to miss when moving to Aomori was finding a gourmet burger shop. Tokyo has many of them. I stopped going to McDonald's or Burger King after discovering burger shops such as Firehouse, Franklin Avenue, Brozers', Shake Tree and others. So imagine my surprise as we were driving to Saruka Shrine when I spotted a burger shop called [Niche]. As it was still early in the morning, we did not stop there but I had a note of it and said to my wife that we should try going there sometime. So I was quite happy that on our way back from Nuruyu Hot Spring, we would be passing by the shop again. As it was nearing dinner time, I suggested stopping at [Niche] for dinner.

A very large burger is displayed at the entrance of the store.

The interior has an open kitchen so you could see the person making the burgers if you were sitting at the counter.

Which burger to choose? I of course chose the avocado burger with cheese. My wife, mother-in-law and her sister all ordered the regular avocado burger.

I think I made the right choice. The avocado cheeseburger was delicious.

The burger was served with thick fries and included some squash as well.

It also looks like the shop sells their burgers from this truck as well.

Bon Appetit!

Nuruyu Hot Spring /

I just love spontaneous road trips. We went to Saruka Shrine in Hirakawa for our first shrine visit of the year but instead of coming straight home, we went to a hot spring area called Nuruyu.

We took a bath here, at Tsuru no Mei Yu.

There were four large Kokeshi dolls displayed out front.

I had to borrow the image from the internet to show you the interior.

I just love the atmosphere of hot spring areas.

Unfortunately, it was time to head back to Aomori City.

First Shrine Visit of 2017 Saruka Shirne and Hogenji Temple /

Where to go for our first shrine visit of the year. As we have already been to the main shrines and temples in Aomori City, we asked my mother-in-law's sister for a recommendation. She suggested Saruka Shrine in Hirakawa located about 45 minutes away by car from Aomori City. We decided to make it a family outing with the four of us.

There is a small shrine in the middle of the lake as well but we will check that out later.

It appears we entered the shrine grounds from the rear. This is the road to the main shrine.

I also came upon a sumo mound on the shrine grounds.

I was curious about the snakes wrapped around the beams on the front entrance.

Of course I had to check out the shrine on the lake.

We saw some koi too. And for some reason, one side of the lake was not frozen over.

We left Saruka Shrine but stopped by one other shrine that was located nearby.

But this wasn't the end of our road trip. Nope, we then headed to a hotspring area and went to Nuruyu Hotsprings but that will be for my next post.
