Hirosaki Episcopal Anglican Ascension Church / 日本聖公会弘前昇天教会堂

In January of 2018, after we had lunch at a soup curry shop in Hirosaki called [Kandy Spice], we drove around the city for a bit and this particular building caught my eye so we stopped to check it out. It's a place called Hirosaki Ascension Church. 

２０１８年の１月。弘前市でスープカレーの店「キャンディ・スパイス」でランチを食べ終わってから、市内にドライブしてた。あるビルが自分の目に止まった。面白そうな建造物だったので、探索してみた。それが弘前昇天教会。

The sign says "Love each other...just as I have loved you, you should love each other." John 13:34 of the Bible. 

A little information about the church. The official name of the church is the Hirosaki Episcopal Anglican Ascension Church. It was established in 1896 as a lecture hall for evangelism.

Soup Curry Shop [Kandy Spice] / スープカレーの店「キャンディスパイス」

When my wife and I lived in Tokyo, we lived within walking distance of Shimokitazawa, a town known for its many curry shops. We had heard about a soup curry shop in Hirosaki called [Kandy Spice] and decided to have lunch there one day. 

僕と妻が東京に住んでた頃、うちのアパートから下北沢まで歩ける距離だった。下北沢と言えばカレー店の激戦区。靑森に引っ越して、私たちがスープカレーの専門店が弘前にあると耳に入った。もちろんその店を実際行ってみて、店のスープカレーを食べたいと想った。

It was still January, so there was still a lot of snow. 

まだ１月だったので、雪を全然溶けてない。

We found the sign for the shop.

We also checked out their menu before going inside. You can choose from three different types of soups and nine choices of curry. 

入店する前にメニューボードを見る。スープは３種類から選べる。カレーは９種類ほどもある。

We noticed the shop gives you a lot of choices. You can choose the spiciness from 0 to 10. There are different toppings to choose from. Also, you can choose from two different types of rice, one being tumeric rice. 

ほかにいろいろ選べる。０から１０のスパイシーさ、トッピングズ、そして２種類のライス。その一つはターメリックライス。

When we first went to this shop, we discovered it was located on the seventh floor of the Nakasan department building in the middle of a bookstore. Very nice interior. 

最初に行ったとき、店の場所は中三弘前店の７階。本屋と一緒になってた。店内は凄い良い。

I think my mother-in-law was with us on this first visit as well. 

義母も一緒だったかも。

I think this was the chicken soup curry. 

これはチキンのスープカレーだったかも。

My wife and I ordered the crispy chicken soup curry. The chicken is served on top of the rice. We probably ordered different soup bases though. 

僕と妻が注文したのは皮パリチキン。カレーのスープは違うけどね。

The chicken was so good!

この皮パリチキンは絶品でした！

You see, the curry looks the same but the taste is different. 

ほら、同じに見えるが、味は違う。

We'll definitely be coming back in the future. Hey look, you can see books on the shelves. 

絶対また来店する。おう、見て、本棚に本がいっぱい見える！！

Indian Restaurant [Taji] / インド料理店「タジ」

In Tokyo, there are a number of great Indian restaurants, but when I came to Aomori City, there were only two or three. We went to the one at Sun Road but it was terrible. Our friends went to one of the other ones and said it wasn't that great. None of us have been to the one on the east side of town. But fortunately, a new Indian restaurant opened near my workplace (back in 2017). It is called [Taji] and I was looking forward to eating there. We finally went on a cold wintry day. 

東京なら美味しいインド料理店が山ほどある。靑森市に引っ越したら、２・３軒しかなかったので、私たちはサン・ロードにある店に行ってみたが、味は不味かった。なんよろこれって感じ。青森出身で東京在住の友達が別の店に行ったと言って、そこもそんなに美味しいではないという感想もあり。街の東側にあるインド料理店はお互い行ったことないのでなんとも言えない。ですが、２０１７年、自分の職場の近くに新しいインド料理店がオープン。それが「タジ」。２０１７年の冬、ようやくその店に行ってランチを食べた。

The interior of the shop was clean and homey. Very comfortable. 

店内は綺麗で落ち着く場所でもあり。

We both ordered the lunch set which includes salad, soup, a piece of tandoori chicken, a choice of two types of curry, rice, naan, and dessert. 

私たちが注文したランチセットはサラダ、スープ、ライス、ナン、デザート付、そしてカレー２種類を選べられる。

There was nothing special about the salad. 

サラダは普通でした。

The soup was delicious. 

スープは美味しかった。

I love tandoori chicken. 

僕はタンドリチキン大好き。

One of the curries I chose was butter chicken. 

一つ選んだカレーはバターチキン。

The other curry I chose is called saag, it is a spinach curry. 

もう１種類のカレーはサーグ、サーグほうれん草のカレーとなる。超美味しい。

Dessert was tapioca I think. 

デザートはタピオカと想う。

This Indian restaurant is as good as some of the restaurants in Tokyo. I was quite satisfied. 

このインド料理店は東京でも負けないように良いと想った。自分は満足してた。

Winter 2023 in Aomori City / 靑森市２０２３年の冬

Today is December 24, it's Christmas Eve. I will be spening my morning and most likely my afternoon as well snow shoveling. Aomori City started getting it's major snowfall starting last week. However, unlike my wife and mother-in-law, I actually enjoy snow shoveling. It's a very zen time for me. 

今日は１２月２４日。クリマスイブ。本日の朝と多分午後もそうと想うが、雪かきをする。靑森市は先週から大雪が降って、毎日ほど雪かきが必要となる。僕は自分の妻と義理の母と違って雪かきするのが楽しい。自分の無の時間となる。

Thursday morning, December 21, around 7:20am in front of our house. 

木曜日朝朝、１２月２１日。朝７時半くらい。家の前。

A bulldozer came and cleared the main road, so large pieces of ice were blocking the gutters. I used the blocks of ice as a base to build a little ramp for snow dumping. 

夜にブルドーザーがメインの道路をクリアして、ガード下の側溝に氷の塊がいっぱいあった。それをベースにして、雪を捨てる場所の坂を作った。

Making the snow ramp was this morning's priority. 

本日の朝のプライオリティはこの坂を作ることだった。

はい、仕事行く前に雪かきしないと。

We'll see how much more snow shoveling I will have to do before spring. 

春まであとどのくらいの雪かきするべきかが分からない。

Winter Scenes in Aomori (2017) / 靑森市冬景色（２０１７）

Well, it's winter again in Aomori City. I spent an hour and half this morning snow shoveling. 2017 was my second winter in Aomori. It was still amazing to me as I've never lived in a city where it snowed so much in the winter. So I would go walking around the neighborhood taking picture. 

さて、靑森市でまた冬の季節になりましたな。本日の朝食後、１時間半雪かいしてました。今年は靑森に引っ越して７年目。雪景色は雪かきはだいぶ慣れたもんだ。でも２０１７年はまだそんなに慣れてなかったので、生で雪景色を見るのが珍しい感じでした。近所を歩き回って、写真いっぱい撮りましたよ。

That's just a lot of snow to me. 

自分にとって、大量な雪だ。

Well, I'm quite used to Aomori winters now and I actually enjoy snow shoveling. I'll probably be outside doing it again tomorrow morning. 

ま、今靑森県民になり、東北の雪が慣れたもんだ。いまは楽しく雪かきをしてます。明日も朝も多分やってると想う。
