It was August 3, 2017. The second day of the one-week long Nebuta Festival in Aomori City. It would be my first to see as an Aomori resident. The Nebuta float parade doesn't start until 7:00pm and it was too beautiful a day to stay indoors and wait for my wife to come home from work. I decided to go out and enjoy the sun and walk around my new surroundings. Today, I decided to wander around Aomori station and its surrounding area.
時は２０１７年８月３日。今日はねぶ祭りの二日目。青森市民で初めてねぶた祭りを楽しむ。ねぶたが出陣するのは夜の７時ですが、今日の天気は最高で家で妻が仕事から帰るのおとなしく待つのは無理。今日は青森駅周辺を探索することにした。
I decided to start my walk behind one of Aomori's best known building - ASPAM. This triangular building is the Aomori Tourist Information Center. There are also many shops selling Aomori regional food and goods.
今日の散歩はアスパムの裏から始まります。アスパムのビルはやっぱり青森市のシンボルにもなってる。建物の正式名は青森県観光物産館アスパム。
The park behind the ASPAM building is the Aoi Umi Park which roughly translates to Blue Ocean Park.

I love checking out the various monuments around different cities. This is a monument to a Japanese poet named Keigetsu Omachi.

I've always wanted to go on a cruise. I had the opportunity to go with my parents and my sister and her husband but didn't have enough funds to join them.

Next to the Aoi Umi Park is a smaller park called Seitoku Park. On the sign, the English is written as Shotoku Park but on the Aomori City Website, the web manager says it should be called Seitoku Park. In this small park, there are quite a few monuments.
青い海公園の隣にまた小さな公園があります。聖徳公園。英語の表示なら「しょうとく」になってますが、青森市のウェブサイトの室長の工藤さんが正しい読み方は「せいとく」と指摘されてます。別の案内版にもSeitoku Parkと書かれてる。とりあえず、この公園にいろんな記念碑がある。
This monument commemorates the place of origin for Japan's Ocean Day holiday.
海の記念日発祥の地。
A monument to something that happened during Meiji Year 14 (1881) on August 29.

Back behind the ASPAM building, you can check out the various Nebuta floats in their storage houses that will be used throughout this week.

It was still too early to go home so I decided to walk to Utou Shrine.
まだ帰るのが早すぎるから善知鳥神社に行きました。

Utou Shrine is such a peaceful spot. I love walking around the shrine grounds.
善知鳥神社は結構心地良い場所でもある。境内を歩き回るのも好き。

思い出した、廣神社はねぶたの時期に限定ねぶたの御朱印がもらえる。廣田神社に行かないっと。廣田神社行く前に正覚寺に寄ってみた。

Although Aomori city boasts many temples and shrines, there are a few churches as well. This is St. Andrews Church.
青森市にお寺や神社は結構ありますが、教会もありますよ。この建物は青森アンデレ教会。
This is Hirota Shrine where I went to get my Nebuta shrine seal.
ここが廣田神社。ここで限定のねぶた御朱印をゲット。
The seal covers two pages and costs 1000 yen.
御朱印は御朱印帳の２ページも使われる。そして１０００円もする。
I was heading home when I saw this interesting piece of public art.
帰る途中にこういったものを発見した。
An old movie projector displayed outside Cinemadict, a small arthouse theater. I thought it was pretty cool. And that was the end of my daytime walk.
昔のムービープロジェクター。シネマディクトという小さな映画館の前にある。結構面白いと思った。それで今日の散歩が終了しました。
