A Trip to the Towada Art Center (Part 3) / 十和田現代美術館の旅 （パート３）

It's now time to check out all the art work you can see free of charge. Starting with this large critter that is also displayed in front of the museum itself. It looks like a piece right out of a science-fiction movie.

さて、今度は無料で見る作品を探索。この作品もミュージアムの前に建てられてる。SF映画の世界に入り込んだ感じがする。

This is a giant, bright red leafcutting ant created by Noboru Tsubaki. It is titled [aTTA].

これが巨大化した真っ赤なハキアリです。作者は椿昇。

I couldn't find the artist or title of this piece of a small boy on a horse.

作者か作品名が見つかりませんでした。馬に乗ってる少年で良いかな。

These look like giant chess knight chess pieces.

これも巨大化されたチェスピースのナイトみたいですね。

A strange looking art piece.

ちょっと不思議な形の作品だ。

This piece is called the [Hypnotic Chamber] and was created by an organization called R&Sie(n) based out of France.

この作品名は「ヒプノティック・チェンバー」。作者はフランスのR&Sie(n)。

This piece is called the [Twelve Level Bench] and was created by Spanish artist Maider Lopez.

スペイン出身のマイダー・ロペズ作品。作品名は「トゥエルヴ・レヴェル・ペンチ」。

You can sit on this piece of art.

この作品の上に座っても大丈夫。

I mistakenly thought this was a character from the Moomin world but is actually titled [Ghost]. It was made by a German artist named inges idee. He was one more piece displayed that we didn't spot.

ムーミンに出てるニョロニョロと思ったら、違いました。作品名は「ゴースト」。作者はドイツ出身のインゲス・イデー。

This might give you an idea of how large the "ghost" is.

この写真で”ゴースト”のデカさが伝わるんじゃないかな。

I took this picture to get the reflection of the "ghost" in the window not realizing that this was inges idee's other sculpture. It is titled [Unknown Mass].

この写真を撮った理由は窓に反射してるのが面白かった。インゲス・イデーの二つ目の作品に気付いてなかった。作品名は「アンノウン・マス」。

This rock that sits on top of a small hill was made by Spanish artist Jaume Plensa. It is titled [EVEN SHETIA] which is Hebrew for "foundational stone" and represents the center or origin of the world. This is a piece to see at night. As the sun sets, a beam of light shoots out from the center of the rock. 

この丘の上にたてる石がスペイン出身のジャウメ・プレンサの作品です。作品名は「エヴェン・シェティア」。ヘブライ語で世界の中心、世界の始まりが表してます。作品は夜に見るべし。太陽が沈んだら岩の中心から光が夜空に真っ直ぐに出る。

This is one of Towada's most popular pieces as the creator is Kusama Yayoi. This is titled [Love Forever, Singing in Towada]. 

これがもしかして一番有名な作品かも。作者が世界的で人気の草間弥生。作品名は「愛はとこしえ十和田でうたう」。

There are a lot of horse motifs around this area as well.

なぜか馬に関連するものも多い。

The last piece we are going to check out is the [Fat House] and [Fat Car] is by Austrian artist Erwin Wurm.

最後見る作品はオーストリア出身のエルヴィン・ヴルムの「ファット・ハウス / ファット・かー」。

The "Fat House" seems to be welcoming us inside.

This building is where the museum cafe is located. However, we decided to go somewhere else to eat.

この建物は十和田現代美術館にあるレストラン。私たちは別の場所で夕飯を食べることにした。

This was a very fun museum and I regret to say that we missed almost all of the "Street Furniture" art except for the "Twelve Level Bench". Then again, that gives us another to come back to Towada!

凄い楽しいミュージアムでした。残念なことに、”トゥエルヴ・レヴェル・ベンチ”以外に街のあちこちに置かれてる”ストリート・ファニチャー”を見逃した。でも、また十和田に行く楽しみでもある。

A Trip to the Towada Art Center (Part 2) / 十和田現代美術館の旅 （パート２）

Continuing our tour of the Towada Art Center. Another great thing about this place is that a lot of the art work is interactive. The artists want you to touch or become a part of the piece.

十和田現代美術館の探索が続いてます。このミュージアムのもう一つの特徴は、いろんなアーティストの作品を触って良いし、なんかアートに一体化になることもある。

This is one of those pieces where you can become a part of the art. This piece is called [on clouds (Air-Port-City)]. The artist is Argentinian born Tomas Saraceno.

これがそういうアートの一つです。作品名は「オン・クラウズ（エア・ポート・シティ）」。作家はアルゼンチン出身のトマス・サラセーノ。

You can climb the ladder and see the art work from the inside.

はしごを上って、アートの中が見れる。

Can you see me? I have become part of the art!

僕を見ますか？自分がアート作品に合体した感じです！

What do we have here? Something called [Bridge of Light] by Spanish artist Ana Laura Alaez.

これはなんだ？スペイン出身のアーティスト、アナ・ラウラ・アラエズの「光の橋」です。

I have become a part of another art piece.

また自分がアートになりました。

There seems to be something strange about this room. There is the body of an animal but it's head seems to stuck inside the ceiling.

この部屋もなんか怪しく感じません？なぜなら動物の下半身が屋根からぶらさてる。頭が見えない！

A sign said to take off your shoes and climb up on the table to check what is above the ceiling.

部屋にサインが置いてました。書かれたのは靴を脱いで、屋根の上を見て下さいって。

My wife did the same.

妻も覗いてみた。

It's a different world above the ceiling. There is a lake with a seal swimming in it.

覗いて見ると別の世界が広がってる。池の中にアザラシが泳いでる。

This may look like a huge curtain of some sort but you must look closely to appreciate how it is made.

普通に見るとなんだかカーテンの様なものにしか見えないかも知りません。でもこれはもっと近づいて見るべきです。

A man-made jellyfish?

人工クラゲ？

Nope, this is composed of tens of thousands of piggy-backing resin figurines.

いえ、数万体の樹脂製の人型彫刻が方車をしてるように、天井から放射状に吊り下げられています。

This was created by Korean born artist Do Ho Suh and titled [Cause and Effect].

この作品の作家と作品名は韓国出身のスゥ・ドーホーの「コーズ・アンド・エフェクト」。

The artist who made this piece has two other works displayed somewhere in the museum. We may have to go back another time because I think we may have missed his other two. The artist's name is Mitushiro Yamagiwa.

この作品を使ったアーティストはあと２作館内のどこかに展示されてる。もう一度十和田美術館に行くべきかも。なぜなら、自分はほかの２作品が見つからなかったか、気付いてなかった可能性もある。アーティストの名前は山極満博（やまぎわ・みつひろ）。作品名は「あっちとこっちとそっち」。

Hey, it's a capybara.

あっ、バケツに入ってたのはカピバラだ。

Another interesting piece. These two sculptures were created by Shin Morikita and titled [Flying man and Hunter].

また面白いがあった。森北神の「フリイングマン・アンド・ハンター」。

The "Flying man" looks like he's going to fall.

”フライングマン”は落ちそうに見える。

I think I hear him screaming, "Somebody help me!!"

自分に思うのは、”誰か助けて下さい！！”と叫んでるんじゃないかな。

This painting done by Costa Rican artist Federico Herrero uses the 13 meter 3 story staircase and its connecting rooftop in one large art piece titled [Wall Painting/Mirror].

このペインティングはコスタリカ出身のフェデリコ・エレーロの作品の「ウォール・ペインティング/ミラー」。１３ｍもある３層吹き抜けの階段塔の内部とそこから続く屋上まで一つのアートです。

This building is not part of the Towada Art Center but I thought it was still interesting with the ruler painted on the side of the wall.

この建物は十和田現代美術館とは関係ありませんが、壁側に描いてある定規が面白いと思った。

I see a giant Nyoro Nyoro from the Moomim stories. We will be checking the art pieces that are located outside of the museum soon. There was one area where photos were not allowed. A room that housed an installation by Norwegian artist Borre Saethre. His piece was called [UNTITLED / Dead Snow World Systems]. All I can say about it was that it was really strange.

屋上から巨大なニョロニョロが見える。これから外側にある作品を見に行く。美術館の一箇所が撮影禁止だった。それがノルウェー出身のボッレ・セートレの「無題 / デッド・スノー・ワールド・システム」。言えることは超不思議な世界観。

However, we had to pass through this room to get to Borre Saethre's installation.

ボッレ・セートレの作品がある部屋に行く途中、この部屋も通らないと行けません。

This extremely large sculpture was created by a German artist named Mariele Neudecker. The piece is titled [This Thing Called Darkness].

このスケールな大きな作品はドイツ出身のマリール・ノイデッカーが作ったものです。作品名は「闇というもの」。

The day we went, there was also a 10th anniversary exhibition being held. It was titled [Do Ho Suh : Passage/s].

私たしが行った日に十和田現代美術館の１０周年記念展も開催してました。それが「スー・ドーホー ： パサージュ」。

When we first entered the museum, I didn't realize the floor of the entrance was also a piece of art.

ミュージアムに入館したとき、入口の床も一つのアートに気付きませんでした。

This piece is titled [Zobob]. It was created by Scottish artist Jim Lambie.

この作品名は「ゾボップ」。アーティストはイギリス出身のジム・ランビー。

That's the room with all those resin figurines.

その中にあるのは樹脂製の人型彫刻。

Now that we've check out all the art that was inside the building, it's time to check out pieces you can see for free. But that will be for the next post.

館内のアートを見終わったので、次は外側に展示されてるアートを探索するべき。でもそれはまた今度。
