Ocean's Diner / オーシャンズ・ダイナー

After leaving Tokyo, I knew I would be missing the gourmet burger shops and would most likely have to settle for one of the fast food chains for my burger cravings but that didn't stop me from exploring. Niche in Kuroishi was a rare find. However, here in Aomori City, a friend of mine mentioned this place and my wife and I finally decided to check it out. The shop is called the Ocean's Diner and is located inside the A-Factory building. A-Factory being a shop that specializes in Aomori regional products.

東京から離れて、やっぱりグルメバーガーショップが恋しくなる俺。青森ならやっぱりチェイン店のバーガー屋しかないんだろうなと思った。黒石にある「ニッチェ」は偶然と見つけたが、青森市にはそういうグルメバーガー屋はないのかな。引越しのちょっとあと、陸奥出身の元同僚がメールでバーガー情報をくれた。青森市、青森駅の近く、A-Factoryというビルの中に「オーシャンズ・ダイナー」というバーガー屋がある。A-Factoryは青森県のお土産がいっぱいならんでる店で、１階の奥にそのバーガーの店があった。２階にもレストランがありですが、今日の目的はバーガーです。

There is a counter space and quite a few tables as well. We sat at one of the tables set near the window.

カウンター席もあり、ほかにテーブルがいっぱい並んでます。私たちは窓際のテーブルで座りました。

Hopefully the sign on the wall will live up to my expectations.

壁にザ・グッド・バーガーが書いてあるから期待出来そう。

You have a choice of ten different burgers on the menu. Check out some of the toppings you could choose from as well - smoked bacon, bleu cheese, hotate (which is scallops) for 150yen or apple, grilled onions, jalapeno, etc for an extra 100yen. I see one burger made with dry aged beef that costs 3000yen!! As this is our first visit to this shop, I decided to go with the Ocean's Burger. This is the shop's original burger with cheese, lettuce, onion, tomato, pickles, and something called Ocean's sauce (their own blend I'm sure).

メニューから１０種類のバーガーが載ってます。トッピングも豊富。プラス１００円でチェダーチーズ、アップル、エッグ、グリルオニオン、ハラペーニョ等、プラス１５０円でアボカド、スモークベーコン、帆立、ブルーチーズも乗せる！びっくりしたのは熟成肉のバーガー。これはなんと３０００円！初めて来た店なので、本日は店の名前にちなんでるバーガーを注文、オーシャンズバーガー。これはチーズバーガーにレタス、オニオン、トマト、ピックルスとオーシャンズソースが入ってます。オーシャンズソースはやっぱり店のブレンドのソースでしょう。

We also had a great view of the Aomori Bay Bridge.

Well, the burger wasn't anything compared to most of the gourmet burger shops of Tokyo but the flavor was quite delicious. I'm sure we will be back again. At first I was undecided about which burger to order as there was a spare rib burger on the menu. I may have to try that on our next visit.

ま、やっぱり東京のグルメバーガー屋にはかなわないですが、味は凄い美味しかった。また来ることは間違いない。実はメニューでちょっと迷ってた。スペアリブバーガーが凄い気になる。次回来たら絶対スペアリブバーガーを食べることを決めた。

You couldn't see the meat patty in the first picture and I wanted you to be sure that yes, there is meat in this burger.

最初の写真で肉が見えないと思って、僕のブログの読者たちにちゃんと肉が入ってるよを伝えたかったので、もう一枚の写真を載せました。

We ordered a set which included fries and a drink. The fries are the thick cut variety.

セットを注文したので、ポテトフライとドリンク付きでした。

Drive to the Nakadomari Peninsula / 中泊半島のドライブ

Last Monday was a National Holiday in Japan. It was Ocean Day. And although we didn't plan on taking a road trip as we made an appointment to get our oil changed at 3pm, we went on spontaneous road trip to the Nakadomari Peninsula. It is only a 30 to 40 minute drive. But as it's summer and a national holiday, many beaches were open. We decided to follow signs to the Nakadomari Peninsula and drove along the sea until we came to a place called Oshima.

この間の月曜日は日本の祝祭日でした。海の日。別に海行こうと思えなかったが、ほかに車のオイル交換も午後３時に予約してるし。それでも天気が良かったので、ちょっとしたドライブに出かけました。車で３０分か４０分ほどの場所に行ってきました。中泊半島にある大島。もう夏だ。いろんなところの海水浴場も営業してる。

We decided to have lunch here. My wife was excited because they had fresh sea urchin on the menu. I'm not a big fan of urchin, I don't mind it, but I decided to have the Oshima ramen instead.

中泊でランチ食べようとして、大島の海水浴場までたどりついた。店のメニューに生ウニ丼があったため、妻は喜んでました。僕はそんなにウニを食べたいと思えなかったので、大島ラーメンを注文。

You could also fish for your lunch in these little tanks which were also full of fresh scallops.

釣り堀で釣った魚も食べられる、中に帆立もいっぱいありました。

妻の注文はやはり生ウニ丼定食。

She said it wasn't bad but not as good as the sea urchin she had at the small restaurant located between Cape Takano and Cape Tappi.

妻は悪くないと言ってましたが、やっぱり高野崎と龍飛岬の間にあった漁師町のレストランのウニにはかなわない。

I didn't know what to expect in my Oshima ramen and I didn't bother asking so imagine my surprise when I found my bowl of ramen full of seafood - scallops, squid, shrimp, whelk, and....sea urchin!!

大島ラーメンはどういうラーメンかまったく分からなかったので、出てびっくり！帆立、海老、イカ、つぶ貝と。。。ウニまで入ってるじゃにいか！！

That is Oshima Island out in the distance connected by this bridge. Unfortunately, since we made plans to get our oil changed at the dealer at 3pm, we didn't have time to walk around or explore the island. We plan on going back another time.

あれが大島です。残念ながら、時間があんまりなくて、大島まで探検することは出来ませんでした。また時間があるときに戻って冒険する。

On our way back to town, we would be passing through Asamushi, so we had to stop at the Michinoku shop that has the large menu of different flavored shakes. My wife decided to have a mixed ice cream while I decided to try the cocoa cookie shake today. And it was delicious!

青森市に戻る途中浅虫も通るので、みちのくのシェイクの店にまた止まった。妻はミックスアイスを食べたんですが、やっぱりここくるとなんかの味のシェイクを注文しないっと。今日僕が飲んでみたのはココアクッキーシェイクでした。やっぱり美味しい！

Day Trip to Lake Towada (Part 2) / 十和田湖の日帰り旅行 （パート２）

As I mentioned last time, we were heading home until a sign caught our eye. Of course, we were enjoying the natural surroundings too.

以前は十和田湖から家に帰ると伝えましたが、ある表示で予定変更。周りの自然も結構堪能してたよ。

Hm, what does that sign say?

そのサインはなんと書いてある？

Hey, it looks like we're in Akita Prefecture now!

あれ、秋田県に入った！

Here's a sign that says don't go into the woods - there be bears!

やっぱり東北って感じ。入山禁止。なぜなら熊による人身事故を防止のためですって。

And for the idiots who can't read - Beware of Bears!!

字が読めない人のためにもこういう看板がある。年寄りはよく熊の住処に山菜やきのこ狩りするもんだね。

Nope, that's not a misprint. There really is a place in Aomori Prefecture where lies the Tomb of Christ! A sign pointing our way here it was caught our interest.

や、表示は間違えってませんよ。青森県に本当にキリストの墓という場所があります。この表示も見てやっぱりまた行くしかないと思った。

Christ's Grave (text provided below)

When Jesus Christ was 21 years old, he came to Japan and pursued knowledge of divinity for 12 years. He went back to Judea at age 33, and engaged in his mission. However, at that time, people in Judea would not accept Christ's preaching. Instead, they arrested him and tried to crucify him on a cross. His younger brother, Isukiri casually took Christ's place and ended his life on the cross.

Christ, who escaped the crucifixion, went through the ups and downs of travel, and again came to Japan. He settled right here in what is now called Herai Village, and died at the age of 106.

On this holy ground, there is dedicated a burial mound on the right to deify Christ, and a grave on the left to deify Isukiri.

The above description was given in a testament by Jesus Christ.

イエスクリストは二十一才のとき日本に渡り十二年間の間伸学について修業を重ね三十三才のとき、ユダヤに帰って神の教えについて伝道を行いましたが、その当時のユダヤ人達は、キリストの教えを容れず、かえってキリストを捕らえて十字架に磔刑に処さんと致しました。

しかし、偶々イエスの弟イスキリが兄の身代わりとなって十字架の露と果たのであります。地方、十字架の磔刑からのがれたキリストは、艱難辛苦の旅をつづけて、再び、日本の土を踏みこの戸来村に住居を定めて、百六才長寿を以って、この地に没しました。この聖地には右側の十字塚にイエスキリストを、左側の十代墓に弟イスキリを祀っております。以上はイエスクリストの遺言書によるものと謂われております。

Is it a demon-spawn? Nah. The legend says that people would put a cross on their child's head before letting them go outside of the house for the first time.

Had to stop for a shake though. My wife had a fresh melon shake while I chose a brown sugar shake today!

家に帰る前やっぱりみちのくのシェイクを飲みました。妻は生メロンシェイク。僕はやっぱり変わった味体験するのが好きで、今日は黒糖シェイク。旨かったよ！

Back home in Aomori City.
