Back in 2017, in the middle of June, we took a little trip to Cape Takano in Imabetsu Town. The weather wasn't the best of conditions to walk out to see the ocean from the two red arched bridges you will find there. A month later on a beautiful sunny day, we decided to make a second trip with the hopes of walking further out to sea. 

２０１７年、6月中旬、僕と妻は今別町にある高野埼に行った。その時天気はまーまーって感じだったので、海に浮かぶ二つの赤い橋は奥まで行けなかった。それから一ヶ月後、天気が良く、またドライブに出かけることになった。私たちはまた高野埼を行ってみることにした。

We will be walking out towards the small outcropping in the middle right of the picture.

First, we must walk down these steps. 

最初にこの階段を下りなきゃいけない。

It certainly turned out to be a beautiful day. 

今日は本当に良い天気で良かった。

You can see the two red arched bridges from here. 

ここから二つの赤い橋が見える。

The first bridge is called Shiosai Bridge. The one that is further out is called Nagisa Bridge. 

手前にある橋は潮騒橋。奥にあるのは渚橋。

At the top of the hill is the Cape Takano lighthouse. 

丘の上にあるのは高野埼灯台。

Chinese Restaurant [Kichun] / 中国料理「吉慶（きっちゅん）

Recently, my wife and I bought these Aomori City gift coupons for 10,000yen and received 13,000yen in exchange. The coupons are good at a number of different shops including many different restaurants.  She saw an ad on television where a Chinese restaurant called [Kichun] was promoting a ramen dish with oysters called "kaki onmen". As I told my wife, I would treat her to lunch sometime, that sometime was now. I also ended up treating my mother-in-law as well. 

景気の復興のため青森市がギフト券を販売してました。一万円を買うと一万三千円分のギフトカードを貰える。カードはいろんな店で使用出来る、デパートやスーパー、そして飲食店も。妻がテレビである中華料理店の宣伝を見てました。旬の食材の牡蠣を使って、牡蠣温麺が食べたいって。この間、そのギフト券で僕がランチが夕飯をご馳走してあげるから、ランチが僕のおごりになりました。その日は義理の母も一緒でした。店の名前は「吉慶」（きっちゅん）。

[Kichun] is located on the second floor of the Aomori Kokusai Hotel. 

「吉慶」は青森国際ホテルの2階にあります。

My wife said the oyster ramen looked really good when she saw the ad on television, but she was not impressed with the actual dish. 

妻がテレビで見たときは凄い美味しそうに見えたが、実際食べてみたら感動するほとではなかったと言ってた。

My wife was surprised that I actually ordered the sweet and sour pork set as she knows I'm not that fond of vinegar. 

僕が酢豚のセットを注文たら妻がびっくりした。なぜと言えば、僕が大の酢嫌いと分かってるから。でもなぜか食べたかった。

Hotokegaura / 仏ヶ浦

During our first year of living Aomori, my wife and I would often go on long drives. One weekend, we decided to go to Hotokegaura Rock Formations located on the sea cliffs on the west side of the Shimokita Peninsula. 

東京から青森に引っ越して、車を購入して、週末よくドライブに出かけた。ある日私たちは下北半島にある仏ヶ浦まで行ってきた。

Our drive takes us through Yokohama Town where there is a very popular tofu shop called Yuisui-tei. One of their specialty products is their u-no-hana donuts. These are donuts made from okara or soy pulp. The donuts taste great when they're fresh out of the vat.

仏ヶ浦行きで横浜地を通るので、横浜町にある有名な豆腐屋さんを寄りました。この店の名物は卯の花ドーナッツ。これはおからから出来たドーナッツです。揚げたてがとっても美味しい。

My wife also likes this dish called miso-konnyaku, konnyaku being Japanese yam. 

僕の妻は味噌こんにゃくも大好きです。

Across from the tofu shop is this small shrine called Hachidai Ryujin and next to the shrine is something called Fukikoshi Yuisui-jin where you can get fresh spring water.

湧水亭の向井に八大竜神がある。その隣に吹越湧水神もある。美味しい湧き水ですよ。

About an hour after driving from Yokohama Town, we made it to Kawauchi where you can see Mutsu Bay. 

横浜町から一時間ごくらいに川内に到着。ここからのむつ湾の眺めが最高。

We stopped at a little rest area for a bathroom break. 

ちょっとしたトイレの休憩。

We've had our car for less than a year and we already hit the 10,000 kilometer mark.

車はまだ一年経ってないのに、もう一万キロ走りました。

Another hour and half of driving from Kawauchi and we made it to our destination where we saw this sign that said to beware of bears!

川内から更に一時間半ドライブしてやっと目的地の仏ヶ浦に到着。最初目に入ったのはこの熊出没注意のサイン！

From the parking lot, we had to walk down a set of stairs to get to the seaside rock formations. 

駐車場から階段を下りて、仏ヶ浦の素晴らしい景色が見える。

Hm, the way down is taking a lot longer than we thought it would. 

あれ、階段下りる時間が思ったより長い。

Dang, how many steps have we walked down so far?

いや～、もう何段下りたかな？

We're getting close now. I can see a boat docked at the pier. 

本当の目的地に近づいたぞ。船が見える。

We finally reached the bottom of the stairs. 

やっと下まで下りた。

There's a small shrine at the bottom of the stairs. 

階段を下りたら小さな神社がある。

This should give you an idea of how large these rock formations are. 

僕の妻を見ると、岩の大きさが伝わるかな。

Now, just enjoy the various views.

I think my wife is eyeballing the sea urchins down there.

I spotted a tiny crab. 

僕は小さな蟹を見つけた。

That doesn't look like a crab. 

これは蟹ではないよな。

We spotted a fish. 

魚を見つけた。

More weird critters. 

あの不思議な生物がいっぱい居た。

I wonder what this is or what is was used for. 

これは何だろうそして何に使われたんだろう。

I believe that's the passenger ferry that goes from Aomori City to Sai Village. 

あの船は確か青森市から斉井村まで行くフェリーだ。

Lots of fresh sea urchin down there. Unfortunately, you're not allowed to take any from this area. 

水の中に大量のウニがある。でも残念ながら、この辺でウニ取ることは禁じられてる。

The tour boats only stay here for about a half-hour. Since we drove, we took our time looking around. 

ツアーボートで来ると、３０分の滞在になるけど、私たちは車で来てるから、のんびり見ることが出来た。

As we walked down the stairs from the parking lot, that means we have to walk back up the stairs to get to our car. What we didn't take into consideration was that there weren't any concession stands or any vending machines nearby and it was a really hot day. Climbing back up those stairs was a major trial. 

駐車場から下りたんでもちろん車に戻るのはまた階段を上らなきゃいけない。私たちがちょっとミスしたことがあった。この周りに売店もないし、自動販売機もない。そして今日は特に暑い日でもあった。階段を上るのがとっても辛かった。

Just looking up the stairs was giving us a headache. 

階段を見あがるだけで頭痛になる。

I think this is somewhere near the half-way mark. 

この辺で半分くらい上ったかな。

When we saw this path, we knew we were nearing the parking lot. As we were driving back to Aomori, we decided to make a pit stop at the Kawauchi Roadside Station. 

この小道を見れば、駐車場はすぐ近くと分かった。青森市まで帰れなきゃいけないので、川内の道の駅にちょっと休憩した。

At the Kawauchi Roadside Station you can get a good view of Kawauchi Lake.

We also made a stop in Ominato so I could take a couple of pictures of the Self-Defence Force ship (one of our students who is in the JSDF says by law, Japan is not to use the word "battleship" or "war ship".)

そして海上自衛隊の基地である大湊に寄りました。なぜと言えば、そこに待機してる艦艇の写真が撮りたかった。
