Hakodate Weekend Getaway (Day 1 - Part 2) /

I took a lot of pictures on our short trip to Hakodate. We took a bus from the ferry terminal to the Bay Area. We were headed to the Kanamori Red Brick Warehouses. Actually, the next order of business was lunch and I already knew where I wanted to go. There is a restaurant called [California Baby] and they serve something called Cisco rice. It's considered as one of Hakodate's soul food, probably the second most well-known food item in Hakodate after the Chinese chicken burger from Lucky Pierrot.

This was such a cool building I had to do some research on it. It is called the Otemachi House. It used to house the old Asano Cement Company's sales office. It was designed by a man named Jinzaburo Muraki and built in 1918. The building was empty from 1990 until 2004 when it was renovated and now a cafe called [CentNaire]. We're going to have to come back here some time in the future.

This is the Bluemoon Hakodate. You can take a day cruise and enjoy lunch on the ship or you can opt for a night cruise. Something else we will have to do in the future.

[California Baby] has come into view.

The interior has a western atmosphere and when we were there, American music from the '80s was playing. I heard Huey Lewis and the News "Power of Love", the Deniece Williams song "Let's Hear It for the Boy" and others.

This is California Baby's Cisco Rice dish. It's rice topped with a sauce that's close to chili along with two large wieners. The portion was pretty large and it tasted good too.

After lunch we were passing through the Kanamori Warehouses and other souvenir shops along the waterfront. We were headed to our next destination - the Memorial Ship [Mashu Maru].

Hey look!, a Pikachu vending machine.

We did make a slight detour and stopped here, a pastry shop called [Snaffles]. For 200yen you can enjoy a small but really rich cheese omelette with a small cup of coffee. You can choose different flavors as well but we all chose the original cheese.

Hakodate Weekend Getaway (Day 1 - Part 1) /

I decided to write a current post about our latest journey. Last weekend, my wife and I, along with her sister and mother, spent the weekend in Hakodate. We had planned this trip a couple of months ago. We would go to Hakodate by ferry as it costs a lot less than taking the shinkansen (bullet train). It's the off season so a one-way ticket by ferry only costs 2,200 yen. Compared to the 7,940 yen for a one-way ticket on the train, this is by far the more economical choice. However, the ferry trip does take three hours and forty minutes. Still, you can walk on deck, eat food from the snack vending machines, drink beer, play games in the game room or just relax and sleep or watch tv in a standard room. My wife also found a good deal on a hotel. We would be staying at three hour hotel in the Yunokawa Hot Spring area. We chose the option of not including dinner. This reduces the price from over 10,000 yen per person to 5,400 yen per person. Breakfast is included and there is a large hot spring bath on the first floor and another smaller bath on the seventh floor. Our ferry would be leaving Aomori City at 10:00am. We will arrive in Hakodate at 1:40pm. As our check-in time for the hotel isn't until 8pm, we will explore the Bay area and go to a few places that were at the top of my list for this trip. First, to have lunch at a restaurant called California Baby and eat their specialty - cisco rice. The other place I really want to check out is the Hula Hoop Cafe which houses a Showa Era Toy Museum. And because my mother-in-law works at the Memorial Ship Hakkoda Maru, she wants to check out the Memorial Ship Mashu Maru and that was also on my list of things I wanted to see.

As with airports, it was recommended that we go to the ferry terminal an hour before departure. This is our ferry. The Tsugaru Kaikyo Ferry [Blue Happiness].

There are four ferries in the Tsugaru Kaikyo Ferry fleet. The Blue Mermaid, the Blue Dolphin, the Blue Dolphin 2, and the ferry we are going to ride on, the Blue Happiness, which is also the biggest of the four.

Here are the specs on our ferry:
      Weight: 8.851 tons
      Length: 144.13 meters
      Maximum Passengers: 583
Maximum Vehicles: 71 trucks or 230 cars

First, we staked out a spot in one of the standard rooms. We picked a spot that was close to a table. You can see my wife sitting at the table. Just so you know, there are four main room options. The above is a standard room. It's a large communal room that requires no reservations. There is a television on the wall and a pillow you can use to rest your head. There is even a ladies only standard room as well.

A step up would be the comfort room which includes a sofa mattress and a washbasin.

There is also the view seat option. You can look out at the ocean from the comforts of a reclining seat and enjoy a casual cruise.

Then there is the most luxurious room - the suite. This room includes a bed, a television, toilet, and a shower room. You can feel like a celebrity staying in a room like this. Of course, it will cost you more as well.

I was playing this game and spent about 2000 yen before buying something to eat.

Time to wander around the deck.

I know that looks like a giant whale but it's actually two small islands. They are both deserted islands on the coast of the Shimokita Peninsula near the town of Wakinosawa. The island is called Taijima because it's said to look like a red snapper, tai being the Japanese name. It is designated as a National Park. The island on the left is called Bentenjima and the island on the right is often referred to as Tateiwa. However, most people say the island looks more like a whale and that the Mutsu Lighthouse on Bentenjima looks like the spouting of the whale from it's blowhole.

We spotted a ship off the right of the "whale" island.
