Memorial Ship [Hakkoda Maru] (Part 1) / メモリアルシップ「八甲田丸」（パート１）

I was off from work for the Obon holidays and I thought I would tour the place where my mother-in-law works. I went to the Memorial Ship [Hakkoda Maru]. This was the ship that was the ferry that ran between Aomori City and Hakodate in Hokkaido. The ferry service began in 1966 and retired in 1988 after the opening of the Seikan Tunnel which connected the island of Honshu with Hokkaido. 

２０１７年の夏。丁度お盆休みの最中だったので、義理の母が働いてる場所のツアーを行ってみようと想った。そこがメモリアルシップ「八甲田丸」。八甲田丸は青森市と函館を繋いだ青函連絡船。フェリーサービスは１９６６年から１９８８年まで活動してた。１９８８年青函トンネルが完成してから、サビースが終了しました。

You enter the ship on the second floor. From there, you walk up to the stairs to the third floor where you will find the Seikan World, displays of Aomori life from the Showa 30's (1950s). 

船の入り口は２階にあります。ツアーの始まりは階段を上って３階からスタート。そこに行くと「青函ワールド」が広がってる。昭和３０年代の青森のジオラマが展示されてる。

Before you even head up to the 3rd floor, you are greeted by these apple vendors (in the Tsugaru dialect!). 

３階に行く前にこのりんご市場のおばさんに声をかけられる、津軽弁で！

As you may know, Aomori is famous for its apples. 

知ってるかもしりませんが、青森県は日本の林檎生産量第１位の都道府県。

The vegetables and egg sellers. 

野菜売りと卵売りのおばさんたち。

Perhaps this family is moving. 

この家族はどっかに引っ越してるかな。

Household items and furniture (and looks like a family pet too).

家の物と家具。そして持ち主のペットかな。

No matter how many times I visit the Hakkoda Maru, this man scares the crap out of me. I think there is something wrong with his neck. One scary waiter I must say. 

八甲田丸何回行ってもこのおじさん不気味すぎる。あの首の周り方は不思議と想いませんか。化け物のウェイターだ。

I'm not sure what he's selling but there must be something in that pot.

このオッサンなに売ってるのか分かりませんが、その壺になんか入ってるじゃない。

This mother and child are working as carriers, the mother is carrying 120 kilos of rice (about two full bags). The son is helping his mother. The police should be checking the packages but seeing it's an old woman with her son, lets them on the ferry without checking their goods. 

この親子は当時の担ぎ屋として働いてた。本来ならこの警察官が親子が担いでるものを検査するべきですが、親子が急いで連絡船に乗ろうとしてるから、そのまま通してあげたというなシーン。

The ship is very large, so I thought I would split up the post to feature certain aspects of the tour. Today we walked through Showa era Aomori. Next, we will be checking out more of the ship.

八甲田丸は結構大きなので、ちょっとづつ紹介することに決めた。今日は主に昭和３０年代の青森市の生活を探検した。次は船を探検する。 />

Well, I must say, it's been one long, cold winter. This year, Aomori City has received the biggest snowfall in thirty-seven years. I've been spending most of my days shoveling snow. A never-ending task. It makes one feel as if you are Sisyphus from Greek mythology. 

さて、今年の冬は凄いしか言えようがない。青森市は３７年ぶりの大雪となった。自分は毎日ほど雪かきに追われた感じ。まるで自分がギリシャ神話のシーシュポスみたい。

On Saturday, January 15, after work as I was waiting for my wife to come pick me up, I thought I would walk around the area and take pictures of the scenery. 

土曜日、１月１５日、仕事終えて、妻が迎えにくるのを待てながら職場の周辺を歩き回って、その日の景色の写真を撮りまくった。

The sidewalk in front of the building where I work.

The mound of snow is also in front of the building I work in. 

あの雪のかたまりも自分が働いてるビルの前です。

The red building is the Nebuta Museum [Warasse]. 

赤い建物はねぶたの家「ワ・ラッセ」。

Even the sidewalks are covered in snow and ice. 

歩道も雪か凍ったアイスになってる。

The building in front of the Aomori Bay Bridge is called A-Factory, a shop that sells regional Aomori food and souvenirs. 

青森ベイブリッジの手前にあるのはＡ・Ｆａｃｔｏｒｙ。青森県産物を販売してる店。

This is at the Warrase West Square. 

ここはワラッセ西の広場。

I decided to check out the illumination at Aomori Ekimae Beach (A-Beach) again. 

また青森駅駅前ビーチ（Ａ・ビーチ）のイルミネーションを見に行った。

The lighted snowmen are all be buried in the snow. 

雪だるまーるたちが雪に埋められてる。

A replica of the Jomon tower found at Sannai-Maruyama. Well, what scientists believe what the structure looked like.

山内丸山遺跡に発見した塔のレプリカ。本物の建物は見つかってませんが、縄文時代の科学者たちがこういうふうに建てられたんじゃないかとの説。

I then took a walk through Aomori Station Front Park.

次歩いたのは青森駅前公園。

I don't think I'll be walking up those stairs anytime soon. 

しばらくあの階段は上ること出来ませんね。

My wife finally came to pick me up and we headed home. She's been pretty busy at work as well. 

妻が仕事をあがって、やっと迎えに来てくれた。彼女のバイト先も結構忙しいみたい。

There is the snow slope I have to continue to maintain for our snow-shoveling efforts. 

あのスコープがあるところは自分がいつも作って直してる雪下ろしへの坂。

This is just to give you an idea of how much snow has been accumulating in front of our house. 

これでどのぐらいの雪が降ったがわかりやすい様に写真撮った。
