Aomori's Neverending Chore of Snow-Shoveling / 青森県永遠の雑用・雪かき

I heard the news the other day that said this year's snowfall has been the heaviest in six years. This is my fourth year of living in Aomori City so this is the heaviest snowfall I've seen to date. And when it snows this much, then you must shovel the snow off your driveway and yard. Before you tell me that I should get a snow blower, there are a couple of things you need to keep in mind. First, the snow piles up in a very narrow and small area. Using a snowblower will just blow the snow into the neighbor's yard which could result in a neighborhood feud. The second is that it isn't cost effective. Snow blowers are expensive and ultimately not worth the investment. We're still lucky though, we can dump our snow across the street as there is a cliff that looks down into a large and mostly empty field. It made me wonder about some of my neighbors though. I see a lot of them dragging their snow to the local park so I decided to take a look at the park. 

この間ニュースで聞きましたが、今年青森県で六年ぶりの大雪でした。自分は青森市に引っ越して4年目になる。そう考えると今年が自分で体験した雪が一番多いになることだ。雪が降るともちろん積もる。そして雪国でやらなきゃいけないことは雪かきだ。除雪機を買えばと言う前に二つのこと教えてあげよう。ひとつ、使える場所は狭すぎて、雪が隣の家に飛ぶしかない。それなら隣人トラブルに発展する。二つ目、除雪機は安いものではない。置き場所もないし、除雪機買ったらと言うのはやめてくれ！うちの家はまだ楽のほう。家の向かいに崖があり、その崖に雪を落とす。でも他の家はどこで捨てるんだろうと思った。よく近所の人々を大きなソリみたいなものに雪を積んで、近くの公園まで行ってるを見て、冬の公園を探索してみた。

Unlike the cliff across the street from our house which slopes down, it's a 90 degree drop at the park. I wonder if anybody has ever fallen by accident.

Snow-shoveling at night / 夜の雪かき

 Last Friday it snowed all day and many of my students cancelled their classes. The office staff also said I could go home a bit early due to the bad weather. My wife came to pick me up and when we got home, we saw that my mother-in-law was doing the snow-shoveling herself. We said we would help after eating dinner. 

先日の金曜日朝から晩まで雪が降ってた。自分の生徒たち何人もクラスをキャンセルして、オフィススタッフも今日は早く上がって良いと言われ、6時間くらいに帰りました。帰ったら義理の母が一人で雪かきをしてた。僕と妻が夕飯食べたあとに手伝いに行きますと言った。

The weater forecast calls for more snow on the weekend so I know I can look forward to a few hours of more snow-shoveling!

天気予報によると今週末雪がもっと降る。雪かきの週末になりそう！

Winter in Aomori 2020 and 2021 / 青森の冬２０２０・２０２１

Last winter was so mild that a lot of people were predicting a long and cold winter this year. It seems their predictions have come to fruition. I spent my new year's holidays snow-shoveling for about two or three hours everyday and before you say, "Why don't you get a snowblower?", one - the space we need to shovel is a too narrow and the only place to blow the snow would be into our neighbor's yard! So, my American friends, please refrain from suggesting that is totally impractical and expensive as well. 

享年の冬雪の量は少なくて、自分も雪かきは一回しかやってなかった。いろんな人がそういう冬だったこそ、今年は結構降るんじゃないかと予想してた。その予想が大当たりになってる。自分の正月休みはほぼ雪かきで追われてた！アメリカの友達が毎年、”常設機買えば？” なんかその提案にいつもイラッとする。大一、常設機は安くない。そして雪が飛ばすところはとなりの家になるから隣人トラブルもなるんじゃないか！

Thursday morning before going to work. I left the mountain for my wife to get rid of as she had the day off. 

木曜日の朝。自分が仕事行く前。妻が休みだったので、その山を片付けてくれた。

I had just finished this area when more snow fell off the roof. 

ここが終わってたのに、屋根からまた雪が落ちた。

I see more snow-shoveling in my future!!

これからもまた雪かきに負われそう！
