Amazingly, in December of 2025 in Aomori City, it didn't snow. It's been almost ten years since we moved from Tokyo to Aomori City and I must say, this was the first year we didn't have a white Christmas. We had friends coming up to visit us from Chiba Prefecture and they were surprised as well. However, on the day they were going back home, which happened to be New Year's Day, Aomori winter weather kicked in. Yep, I started the New Year off by snow shoveling.
２０２５年の１２月の靑森市は珍しく雪が降ってなかった。東京から靑森市に引っ越して、約１０年が経ちますが、２０２５年は初めてホワイトクリスマスではなかった。千葉県から遊びに来た友達もびっくりしてた。友達が元旦で千葉県に帰るとき、雪が降り始めた。自分は年末年始の休みで、元旦から雪かきでした。

I have my work cut out for me today. My wife had to work and I told my mother-in-law, she didn't have to help. Oh, and before my American friends start suggesting we get a snowblower, every year I have to remind them that it isn't cost effective, where we live isn't as spacious as the U.S. and the snow would only be blowing into the neighbor's yard which would be detrimental to the peace of the neighborhood. So please, refrain from suggesting to us about getting a snowblower.
今日は雪かきたっぷりやらないとな。妻が仕事で、義理の母はやらなくて良いと言ってあげた。あっ、自分が始まる前に。毎年、アメリカの友達が除雪機買えば良いと提案する。そして毎年、なぜ買わないのを説明する。一つ、除雪機はめちゃ高い。雪を飛ばしても、隣人の土地に入る、隣人トラブルが起る可能生が高い。あと、日本はアメリカと違って、そんなに広い訳でもありません。はい、毎年、アメリカの友達にこれを言ってる。

I didn't take any pictures on Friday, January 2. However, my wife also had the day off so she helped me do the snow shoveling in the morning.
年開けの２日目の雪かきの写真様子は撮ってなかった。でも、妻も休みだったので、朝から雪かきは二人でやった。二人でやると、結構早めに終わる。
年開けの最初の土曜日はやっぱり雪かきから始まった。

Also, on Saturday, my mother-in-law and I went to our first temple visit of the year. This year we went to Shohouji Temple which is within walking distance from our house.
土曜日の雪かきのあと、初詣に出掛けました。今年はうちの近くにあるお寺にお参りしました。お寺の名前は照法寺。
To get to the temple, we have to walk up a small mountain.
徒歩でお寺に行くのはちょっとした登山みたな感じになる。

As we were nearing the top, the monk and his wife were about to leave. However, the monk's granddaughter was one of my former students and we still keep in contact through LINE. I told the monk that I was talking to his granddaughter right now who was currently traveling in Portugal. She's also attending university in France on an exchange program.
山頂に着いたら、住職が妻とちょうど出掛けようとしていました。住職の孫娘は僕の元生徒で、まだLINEで繋がってる。彼女は現在フランスの大学で勉強していますが、その日は旅中でポルトガルにいました。住職に今孫娘と話してまよと言ったら、一旦止めて、お寺に戻りました。せっかくなので、ビデオメッセージに切り替えた。人と人の繋がりが面白いよね。
After our chat, there was something my mother-in-law wanted to do here. That was to ring the temple bell.
話したあと、住職とお別れし、義理の母がこのお寺で一番やりたいことをやった。それはお寺の鐘を鳴らすこと。
