I thought I would write another post about one of our recent adventures. A couple of weeks ago my wife was watching a local television program and on the program they featured a temple in Hirosaki that we haven't been to. It is called Kudoji Temple and once every thirty-three years, the temple shows an image of a hidden Buddha to the public. At this time, the public will have a chance to see the Honzonsekanzeon Bodhisattva. Of course you have to pay a small fee to view it, but to celebrate this event, the temple has commissioned calligrapher Airi Hara and Aomori native artist GOMA to make a design for the temple's seal. As my wife and I collect temple and shrine seals, that was our main objective in going to Kudoji Temple.
また最近体験したことのネタ書き下ろそうと思ってる。２週間ほど前、妻がテレビで青森のローカル番組を見たら、私たちが行ったことないお寺が弘前にあるとわかった。お寺の名前は久渡寺（くどじ）。今年の４月１９日から３３年に一度お寺にある「本尊望観世音菩薩」の一般ご開帳が行われてる。授与奉納料は一人様１０００円。それを記念して数量限定の御朱印も販売してあます。お寺が書道家の原愛梨さんと青森出身のアーティストGOMAさんを依頼して、デザインを求めました。僕と妻がお寺や神社の御朱印集めもしてますので、私たちの狙いは御朱印のみ。

The main temple. There was an event going on inside so we decided to wander around the temple ground first.

There was also a small pond behind next to the Kannon-do.
観音堂の隣に小さな池もありました。
I spotted a frog and a bunch of tadpoles. I didn't realize the frog was dead at first.
池の中に蛙とオタマジャクシを発見。最初に見たとき蛙が死んでるのとは気づいてなかった。
My wife will probably scold me for posting the above video clip. She says it's bad luck. Well, I'm not superstitious and I thought it was fascinating that the tadpoles were feeding on the frog.
動画をアップして妻に怒られる可能性あり。妻がオタマジャクシが蛙を食べる動画の縁起が悪いと言う。自分は迷信は信じない人なので、この自然な現象が不思議だなと思った。
But this frog was alive and kicking. I think it looks pretty cute.
この蛙は生きてます。結構可愛いと思う。
More steps to climb and more little shrines to check out. This is the Kumano-do.
また階段を上って、また小さな建物を見てみる。これは熊野堂。
We also discovered an area where there are a whole group of Kannons.
また面白い所があった。観音石像群。
I spotted a sign that pointing the way to an observation deck so I suggested we check that out first before going back to the main temple.
山の上に展望台があるという表示を見つかって、妻に本堂を行く前にその展望台に行ってみようで山を更に登った。

The event had ended when we went back to the main temple. We were not interested in seeing the hidden statue but were there to get our special temple seals. Afterward, we would walk down the steps and have lunch at the ramen shop close to the parking lot.
本堂に戻ったとき、イベントが終了してました。私たちはその３３年ぶりの一般公開する菩薩には興味がなかったんですが、目的の御朱印をゲット。また登った階段を下りて、駐車所の近くのラーメン屋でランチを食べる。

We had lunch at this small ramen shop called [Kudoji Temple's Ramen Shop].
ランチはこの店で食べました。店名は「久渡寺のラーメン屋」。
I ordered the miso chashumen. It cost 900yen.
僕が注文したのは味噌チャーシュー麺。値段は９００円。
My wife ordered the shoyu chashumen. The price was 700yen.
妻は醤油味のチャーシュー麺を頼んだ。値段は７００円でした。

This temple seal was designed by Aomori native and artist GOMA.
この御朱印は青森県田舎館村出身のアーティストGOMAさんがデザインしたものです。
Kudoji Temple had commissioned popular calligrapher Airi Hara to design a seal and this is what she came up with. Hara is not only a calligrapher, the kanji characters of her pictures are made to create a picture or image. If you look closely at the Kannon in the middle, you will notice that all the parts are also kanji characters. The left wing is made with kanji characters for Kudoji Temple (久渡寺). The right wing uses the kanji characters for sanpai (参拝) which means "worship", etc.
最後の御朱印は書道家の原愛梨さんが作られたデザイン。彼女の特徴は漢字を使いながら、絵を描く。観音の体や翼を良く見ると全てが漢字で出来てる。左側の翼に”久渡寺”、右側の翼に”参拝”。なにが書いてあるのはを探すのも一つの楽しみと思いますよ。
Usually, I would add these ready printed seals into my seal notebook but I thought these were too awesome and should be displayed somewhere so I bought small frames for all three of them. Now, I'm wondering where to hang them in my den. And so ended our Sunday adventure.
普段なら先書きの御朱印も御朱印帳に入れますが、あんまり綺麗で入れるのがもったないと思い、三枚をフレームに入れて、今は自分の書斎でどこを飾るのが迷ってる。そして、私たちの日曜日の冒険の幕が閉じた。
